It helps you blast Bydoo empire.

Only thing that gives you a chance to survive in r-type.
>>
>>13578173
It's a Force.
It's made of aliens.
It stops non-piercing bullets.
By shining RBY colored light into it you can channel a different kind of shot (in addition to the one provided by your mounted wave cannon)
You can ram it into enemies to deal contact damage, and on bosses it racks up quite quickly.

final bosses hate your force and will always destroy it for one reason or another

it's kinda sad to see the company that used to make one of the most iconic shmup games is now just making pachinko games.

And it's quite a shame they refuse to translate R-Type Tactics 2. Honestly I wouldn't mind the name change in R-Type command that much though

According to what I remember of the old archives that's just the R-9c WarHead. Removal of limbs for better control of the ship through subspace via direct thought input or something.

Mind, I'm just parroting the post as I remember it. I don't have Tactics 2 nor access to Japanese materials (if there're any in the first place) so I've got no way to confirm that myself.

Still I have to say that it sounds like pretty heavy stuff just to pilot what amounts to the GM custom of the series.

That was the single most goddamn frustrating mission in Tactics I, and your only truly specialized aquatic combat unit, the Frogman, wasn't that great for it. Thank goodness Tactics II didn't have really fucking deep water missions like that one.
>>
>>13591372
>>13591374
The damn Dobkeratops isn't even the problem. It's the fucking turn limit. That should have just been a number you could try to shoot for, call it par, and depending on well you do gives you some bonus resources or something. But don't fucking fail you if you go past it.
>>
>>13591307

The Ide? It's not a faction, I know.

>>13591393

Yeah, that was mostly it. The stage being vertical and like, 90% water just added to it.

Another mission in the games I know that has a notable turn limit is the final mission of Tactics II's first chapter. There's only one route to the capture point, and it's padded with top-tier units. You likely won't beat the turn limit unless you find a way to kill the units in your path quickly (hint: with desynch units).
>>
>>13591253

That's the whole point of R-Type. As far back as the supplemental material in R-Types, it's pretty much confirmed that everything you do is at best a holding action. The Bydo is OP as fuck.

The source comes from here:
http://www1.odn.ne.jp/deeptown/rtype/r9c/r9c.html
http://www1.odn.ne.jp/deeptown/rtype/r90/r90.html

According to this fanpage, only three R-9Cs were produced, piloted by quadruple amputees, and the R-90 Ragnarok was at least partially controlled by a biological computer in the form of a 23-year-old woman's mind inhabiting a 14-year-old clone body.

Note that no sources for this information are apparent. It may just be a persistent rumour in fan circles. Better take it with a grain of salt.

Was that not hinted at? That some of the technology involved ended up accelerating the Bydo project, Terminator-style?

Whatever. I did some more googling and the Japanese Wikipedia article echoes the amputee/clone pilot thing, and seems to refer vaguely to some Irem production materials as a source. So who knows.
>>
>>13600009
Did some more googling. The information seems to have come from an artbook of some sort, and it seems to be less quadruple amputee and more brain in a jar: it seems the R-9Cs were piloted by mysterious cylinders with ANGEL PAC written on the side, their contents classified. The pilots are not there by choice, and the military covered up the existence of the R-9Cs, pretending that the operation in R-Type II was carried out by R-9As instead. As well the Ragnarok pilot seems to have been a girl whose physical aging was arrested at 14. Typical anime stuff.

>>13600035
No clue about that one.

Not out of nowhere. It was stated in previous materials that mankind created the Bydo to fight some kind of war in the far future. In tactics 2, we just finally get to see who these guys are, the so called "Advanced civilization".

We don't know a lot about them, other than that their technology is incredibly advanced, that their ships are able to travel through black holes, and they had... Something set up at the edge of the known universe that was disintegrating man and bydo forces alike into white light (see: "Space Auschwiz") for an unknown, but seemingly sinister purpose.

It's known that the Earth forces are kind of dicks in the future, the kind who would weaponize the Bydo and send them to wipe out a distant civilization... But judging by the state of the Earth in the later stages of Tactics 2, they have either abandoned the planet, or are seriously getting their asses kicked by these guys, enough so that mass-producing Dobkeratops is seen as a viable countermeasure.

It really would be nice to have some more information though - a lot is speculation due to the unreliable nature of the Bydo campaign narration.
>>
>>13616233
>due to the unreliable nature of the Bydo campaign narration.

Even without fully understanding moonrunes, the Bydo campaign in Tactics 2 felt like an acid trip. Personally, I found it difficult to predict what opposition I might face per mission when I did my first run. Even fighting other Bydo was fucking crazy. The nonstandard visual arrangement of the campaign's mission sequence only left me wondering wherever the hell the Bydo hivemind (if it was ever guiding the player, anyway) was going to send me next.

I thought Creature System (boss battle), Through Thick and Thin (F-C), Counter-Current Space (6.1), Dimension 26 (5.0), and all but the highest AI V.S. themes were pretty great. Stage 1.0 is a sleep-inducer, though I appreciate its attempt at ambient feel.

I'm pretty much a sucker for the "creature-type" boss themes in Delta and Final.
>>
>>13629847
I liked what Final was going for, or at least what I think they were going for.

The war against the bydo has been going on for a long ass time. Everyone is exhausted from it and of it. By the time of Final the majority of humanity has been reduced to a single city. Every mission against the bydo has driven them back but it was always only temporary. The conflict, just like humanity's hope, is winding down and the music reflects that I believe.

The Final Boss theme to me is amazing at least given the history of R-type. it's so fitting for a final boss theme giving this awe inspiring yet horrifiying sense of finality, i can imagine what was running through that pilot's mind as they looked upon the literal face of the devil and realized that their life was insignificant in it's presence. fully reinforcing that they had to complete this mission at all costs.
>>
>>13630237
Way too much, though. Some of the fighters could have been reduced to one line and the option to select Forces, Wave Cannons, Missiles, and Bits the same way they did for some of the Bydo and Ultimate fighters.

It's nice to see a reasonably-linked technological progression but some things, like the plant-based fighters, could have fit into a single development tree. And while it's nice to know that the R-9A was improved various times, some things are better read than experienced; playing through the A2 to get to the A3 and A4, repeat for the R-9B line, the R-9E line, and the others gets tiring after a while and the same goes for the TL-series.

The red laser spam has never been stronger than with the TL line because in most cases it's pretty much the least-grief-per-shot weapon. I'm sure hardcore players found joy in using the yellow laser on units like the TL line and the RX-10 Albatross, but these examples are more of "are your balls big enough?" In general gameplay the yellow laser on these craft are pretty much nigh unusable compared to the red/blue lasers. The R-9E series are another offender of this trend in that repeated playing is required to "finish" unlocking the lineage but at least the Wave Cannon is relatively understandable in function and the Unchained Silence has pretty much the best fucking name and EWACS ship design ever.

Of course, all in the name of the series' "feel", but I still think they went overboard with the total number of ships.

It's great to see them revamp the usage of some of the ships in Tactics, though. The TL-line units that made it into Tactics/Tactics 2, for example, gains some pretty ridiculous attack stats. You also get some T/T2 original units like the Hector (which is pretty much How Many Wave Cannons Can We Put On A Biped Frame: The Frame) or the Gains III to go along with them.

The Gains Mk3 might seem like a downer compared to the normal Gains and the Positron Mk2, but it's made of just as much rape, if not more. Especially in Tactics 2, where its younger brothers had their charge times nerfed, you'll likely find a use for the Mk.3.

The Hector is fucking glorious, but having more than one will slow you down.

One of my gripes with Tactics 2 is that the Bydo got less good shit than the Space Corps gets. Who the fuck thought that giving a fuckhuge ship Boldo-tier stats and range was a good idea?

>3 wave cannons

do they have different charge time?

Two of those charge in 4 turns. One is the Wave Cannon used by fighters like the Albatross, and the other is basically what the Shooting Star uses.

The third charges in 9 fucking turns, but its coverage and impact are undeniable.

>What! You’re telling me that mysterious, nihilistic sound wasn’t intentional?

>Ishida: Yeah, and that memory is why I still get kind of panicked when I see R-Type II. The stage 4 music is also missing a second half that I wanted to add, and when I hear it now I always think “oh yeah, I never got around to making that part…”

Man, if only the 1st half of a song sounded that rad, I can't imagine how cool it would have been completed.

I remember finding this interesting when I watched it. But that was a year or so ago. So no idea how it holds up or how correct the information is.

Delta and Final, which is where things start to get more lore/atmosphere-focused and less "arcadey shooter", also have difficulty modes. Just play on easy and gradually move up. I won't lie, I still can't clear Final 6.0's tunnel run on anything above Normal without using the Dose Weapon.

Both games also feature OP as fuck ships in their selection so if you're not looking into completion with Final, you only need two runs for Delta - one in the R-9A2 and one in the R-13A for the bad end and in Final, just gun for the R-13A3 Charon as the RX-12 Cross The Rubicon is required to unlock stage 3.5, otherwise other stage variations are independent of your selected ship and never have to do insane dodging again.

This is assuming you aren't emulating, and manage to find a PS2 to play both games. Otherwise don't even bother with the above, just savestate.

What you should be worried about are Tactics/Tactics II on the PSP. Those are where most of the discussed lore of R-Type come from; they have no difficulty select, and battle conditions are a lot more stringent than most TBS games; you can't produce new units on the fly like Advance Wars, but your units don't get the massive stats boosts compared to enemy units in "merry band of adventuring characters" games like in SRW/Fire Emblem/Yggdra Union.

You start out being outnumbered 1:1.5 and the scale only gets larger from there, and a turn limit per mission will punish you for minor faults simply by having you run out of time long before you and the enemy can annihilate each other in battle. Expect to play missions multiple times; you will need to in order to get all the special item crates, some of which contain blueprints to further your tech tree. They're usually located outside of the optimal route to win missions, too, but at least you only need to collect them; mission failure or success doesn't impact your unlocking their contents permanently.

MUHAHAHAHAHA!

>being outnumbered !:1.5 and the scale only gets larger from there

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

>>a turn limit per mission will punish you for minor faults

I've played through both Tactics games and I still thought that was bullshit.

In the game's defense, everything else can be mitigated with the use of careful progression and well-placed scouts units like in every TBS game ever. There are also plenty of empty maps that make the round easy to clear once everyone has their Wave cannons up.

So I guess they added the turn limit to fuck the player up by making sure that some missions can only be barely completed under the turn limit - not accounting for if players take it too safe or don't stick to a tightly-controlled objective plan.
