This. The only good movie was The Legend Reborn since it made the 3D models exactly like the toys, like it should be.

The toys were okay, but really Bionicle started out with one of the most unique sci-fi concepts ever devised, and was utterly ruined as the years went by because Lego got greedy and conservative. The amount of worldbuilding and design that went into the first 3 years was absolutely incredible and easily stands toe-to-toe with the worldbuilding of the Universal Century in Gundam.

Don't really follow the lore but you can make some pretty /m/ stuff with bionicle parts
>>
Hell yeah I do.

Takanuva TWILIGHT > Kopaka Nuva > your favorite Toa.

Toa Metru arc was my favorite. Cyberpunk bio-city a bes.

Mata/Nuva were a better team though.

Hordika were meh. Piraka were good villains, but Voya Nui and Mahri Nui really got on my nerves for some reason. Good story in a lackluster setting, I felt.

>tfw no full Toa Hagah team.
At least I got Iruini and Norik.

Lhikan's design was also great, would've been cool to see more of him and Metru Nui's history.

The only movies that hold up are surprisingly the CGI TV commercials.

ignoring the music this shit was impressive for being a toy commercial.

just you

If anything they're the most complex "canister-sized" sets created, given that even some of the small 10$ sets have like 120 parts compared to the 20-something from the earlier sets.
And now that they got rid of the socket-cracking problem and are refining ideas of the old toys like the floppy gears and the stupid Phantoka combining-gimmick they're better than ever.

>>
I like them, I didn't like the later redesigns though.
>>
>>13565461
The Phantoka/Mistika figures or the 2015 reboot ones?
The 2015 figures are absolutely fantastic.
>>
>>13564934
I remember having so much hype for the Bionicle of Light reveal in the comics. Then there was a panel that just said "LOL WATCH THE MOVIE TO FIND OTU WHAT HAPPENS FAGET" and I was so mad I never saw the movie. It was bullshit how they looked so different from the toys and comic characters too.

The Mask of Light set with his giant finish was amazing though.
>>
>>13565617
>The 2015 figures are absolutely fantastic.

it's not actually, i don't have to like what you find amazing is that okay
>>
>>13564900
I used to like them when I was younger.

I thought the commercials were cool enough for me to want them. Then I went to their website and they had a cool flash game. I was hooked until they kept pumping out new stuff ever 6 months. Figures for a toy company, but I lost interest about a couple of years into it.
>>
I was really into it from 2001 to 2005, bought lots of the sets, frequented BZPower, drew fanart, etc. Around 2006 I quite keeping up with it..
>>
>>13564944
The concept really was interesting. It's fascinating to read the creators' statements about the development of the IP and see that they had the true nature of Mata-Nui and everything planed out from the very beginning.
>>

Speaking of which, apparently Faber started digging up and posting even more old concept material just this year. Wow, I didn't know.

Writing's shit and good god, MOL's ending is a complete load of fuck, but I enjoy them from an artistic standpoint, dat art direction, dem atmosphere, dat music. The cheap CGI has its charm too. TLR is irredeemable, though.

That's what I found so fascinating about some of this early stuff, including Slizers. They're so unlike what you'd expect an average kids' robot toyline to be, what with all these creepy heads and faces, out-there designs and the almost surreal aura that surrounds them. They could have been simple, generic, humanoid robo guys (sorta like some of the later Bionicle designs), but no, they actually went creative with them.

>>
I just looked at all the Bionicles after 2005, damn the word ugly can't even begin to describe what I saw.
>>
>>13567152
The movies weren't particularly well done, anyway, and if you watch them these days they'll will be cringeworthy as hell with their indirect killings, tons of animation errors and in The Legend Reborn's case more lore errors in the first five minutes than a Bethesda game.
Not to mention that the first one was basically LotR - The Abridged Robot Version.
>>
>>13567152

The movies were very odd with how they had all this implied lore that I'm sure as hell must have confused casual viewers, but they never explained any of that. Heck, the second movie was a prequel, yet the characters kept making references to even earlier events. But the movies were basically just condensed visual representations of the story, they weren't meant to cover the whole deal. To get the whole story, you needed to play the games and read the books and comics.

Lego kinda fucked themselves over with spreading all this across so many media platforms and not having an easily accessible way for following the story. All that work put into it, so little of it actually reaching its audience.

>>
>>13567289
If it matters, he still uses air, but he also now has plant powers.

Too bad the writers for the book and webisodes shut him down whenever he tries to use anything involving air.
>>
>>13565299
Yeah, I really appreciate all the effort they now put into the builds... well, for most of 'em. Some people seem to think that they're basically like the Hero Factory toys, one torso piece with an armor slapped on, basic limbs, and that's it. But they actually have pretty interesting, relatively intricate builds under the armor plating.

Even the small sets have complexity, lightyears ahead of the shitty "giant torso, one-piece limbs, flat bodies" sets they put put at the end of G1.
>>
How many Bohrok is too many Bohrok?
>>
>>13564944
Bionicle's setting feels like it would have been more suited fro a tabletop RPG or video game and animu than selling toys. The fact that Lego came up with something so bizarre and unique has to do with the fact that this was the first IP they really put a lot of thought into. The new Bionicle is just a sad hollow shell of its former self.

The books are a very mixed bag, mostly because of Greg Farshtey. And then when the serials came out, Bionicle was officially dead to me.

One of the things I hated about the fanbase in later years was that they needed to be spoonfed every single detail. Because of that, Bionicle's story went down the toilet.

Something about the Bionicle fandom really attracted a specific subset of autists who were also massive christians and homeschooled too.

The site went to shit after the franchise was put on hiatus. As someone else mentioned, first it was flooded by Christians and assholes like the one mentioned in >>13568476, and after that came the tumblrites. For the last couple of years, the site's been holding onto a very negative image in the eyes of many, mostly due to all the man-hating swj shit that went down there, for instance heated arguments over "muh robot toy gender/LGBT representation" and other stuff that seemed to crop up every few months. Also add the usual fandom drama, corrupt mods, the forum losing the bulk of its members, and mixed together with the usual autism that's always surrounded the userbase, this resulted in a horrid concoction of degeneracy.

It's not as bad now, but Jesus.

went to shit after Metru

Nobody forgot, but nobody mentioned it because some were turned away by the anime faces. I didn't mind them personally. Still don't and I thought the story was going somewhere.

>The books are a very mixed bag, mostly because of Greg Farshtey.
What makes the comics different, considering he wrote them too?
>>
>>13570234

The comics are shorter and have much less content, so there's less GregF to deal with.
>>
>>13570239
Then why even read the comics in the first place?

>implying people actually read them
>not just look at the colorful pictures
>>
>>13570249

The art was nice.

Some of it was.

See, I left long before the hiatus/"end," roundabout the tail end of the Inika days. I felt like things started going to shit around the time they introduced blogs. The site was already being run by corrupt mods and admins and was flooded by Christians. I know it was a site for kids/young teens and all, but it was kind of disturbing how some people acted sometimes.

I don't remember their name, but I remembered there was an account that was shared by a brother and sister from a devout Christian family. Eventually the brother got his own name, no big deal, but things got weird when their -mom- joined the site and became a really active poster. I remember she posted a lot of fanfiction about her self-insert OC that was really creepy at times because she wrote a lot of romance/shipping fics.

Oh, I remember that. IIRC the mom was active prior to her children though.

Those sets were my second-favorite HF wave after Breakout.

I think recall that as well, never noticed much of the religious stuff back at the time, though. It still crops from time to time, but thankfully most people seem to know to keep it to themselves. Although there was a time when bonesiii (who should get slapped up the face real good by the way) tried to ask people not to treat evolution as fact, nothing dramatic, but as I recall they eventually had to make a statement that yes, you can freely talk about evolution on the site.

I only followed the site beginning from around the middle of '05, so I knew about a lot of the "classic" big name members there, but I only remember one or two of them now.

Supposedly the old universe continues on in stories we'll never see. New stuff is a new universe with no connection. So how long do you think it'll be before they do a cross over?
>>
>>13570637

>bonesiii

The guy who wrote an entire term paper's worth of shit every time he posted no matter what the subject? I think of all the people who had sticks up their asses on that site, his was the biggest and lodged the deepest.

He's got a massive creationism essay on his own personal website.
>>
>>13570719
>>13570725
Yes. He seems to spew creationism everywhere he goes. I once found him on some travel destination website or wherever, where he spammed up the comment section of some creationist museum with literally hundreds upon hundreds of posts. It was madness, this guy just cannot stop once he starts spewing fuckshit. I felt embarrassed scrolling down and down and down, seeing his undending flood of anti-science ramblings.

Though always calling himself a logician and shit, he's just plain... dumb. Like, his "arguments" for why science/atheism/other religions/being gay are wrong and evil are the absolute most *basic* stuff that's been debunked a million times over. He displays every beginner-level logical fallacy in the book, like a walking embodiment of creationist stereotypes.

On a positive note, he's digitally made some creative mini MOCs of characters.

Why do I know so much about this cretin?

I wanna hear more about this mom, she sounds hilarious.

I have q funny story about bionicles actually...
So there was this kid at my high school, and he was (and i am using this in its actual context) super autistic.
Additionally he had probably the most EXTREME foot fetish ever, and could not keep it private at all. He was ao obsessed with women's feet that he successfully determined the genders of two people by the smell of their shoes in a blindfolded ABX test.

Anyway, he LOOOOOVED Bionicles (they're pretty dope, so that's reasonable), and naturally he took that shit way too seriously.
There was some sort of Christmas gift exchange thing, and he asked for his designated gift giver to get a bionicle (a very specific one iirc) for him. She couldn't find it at all, as this was during a time when Bionicles were not exactly common toys, and for the most part they were not available and out of production, so she got him something else (i don't know what) and when he got it, he threw an EXPLOSIVE tantrum, repeating "I WANTED A BIONICLE! YOU BITCH! I'LL KILL YOU!", etc over and over again until the AP arrived and escorted him out, kicking and screaming.

was this around the time of the visorak line? A lot of those kits were pretty rare

Not anymore. There's some kind of connection being hinted.

The island of Mata Nui's in the new promo stuff for some reason.
>>
>>13571868

Isn't that just the new island, okoto or whatever?
>>
>>13571868
Okay let me explain what I meant.

You know how DC comics have Earth 1 and Earth 2? They're not really connected but they still both have Superman, Batman, etc and both have places like Earth?

That Mata Nui in the new stuff is the new universe's version of it.
>>
>>13571868
Wasn't the mask of time in the new animations or something?
>>
>>13570915

Like I said, I don't really remember. She had that whole "beaten wife" air about her and the stories (or was it fanart?) she created had really creepy vaguely sexual undertones. Considering this was a deeply Christian family and we're talking about a boys toyline of biomechanical tribal superheroes...
>>
>>13572517

I think you mean either Lady Kopaka or Hahli Husky?
>>
>>13572331
Yes. The Mask of Time actually makes a physical appearance in the first 2015 novel.
>>
>>13572538

That first one maybe? I'd need something to refresh my memory and I don't know if I want to go down that road.
>>
>>13572541
How does that work? Was that novel written by Greg too?
>>
>>13572538
>>13572543
There was also a once very active mom member going by the screen name Macku: Toa of Bubbles. Though I have no idea if it was her, since I don't remember much about these people.
>>
>>13572517
GaliGee?
>>
>>13572584
Greg was only a consultant in the early phase of development, the book was actually authored by veteran Star Wars writer Ryder Windham.

As for the mask, it's just there, and the Protectors use it to summon the Toa.
