Are you me? Because I just got it for my birthday too and just finished playing it. Loved it too. My only complaint is, like others have said. it's a bit too short. It's like there was a level missing somewhere when the Autobots suddenly are on the Spacebridge to Cybertron, so I'm guessing they had to cut some things. Also wish we got more playable characters, like Ironhide, Prowl/Bluestreak or another one of the Dinobots.

That's more the downsides of 3D CGI compared to traditional animation.

Creating a 3D CGI model for a new character takes much longer than creating a new character design in traditional forms, but once the models are created it becomes cheaper to animate them.

I really feel like humans are vital to a Transformers story.

Transformers are giant alien transforming robots. Take away the humans to contrast them with and you lose the "giant" aspect and "alien" aspects.

I do prefer it when the humans are actually capable though. I appreciated that they did that in the Bayformers movies. Another thing they got right.

i beg to differ. some of my favorite transformers content, mostly the cybertron games and the dw war within comics, have little human involvement. it's not so much the giant robot part that draws me to them but kinda how their culture is. i'm the type of guy who wants to learn about how they live more than where they're fighting, i guess. a pre war "sitcom" of transformers would be great, but not like that fucking comic right now.

I think all Dark Cybertron did was affect the ending of the Tyrest arc (it's clear that Roberts planned an epilogue issue that got relegated to a text story instead). There was a chart some of the Transformers fans on /co/ made a couple of years back, but i can't seem to find it on my computer.

But yes, you can start with the G1 movie, though I'd suggest watching seasons one and two before it. It's typically 80's goofy, and has a lot of animation errors, but the voice acting is enjoyable and the episodes are still fun overall.

There was a season three after the movie too, which is really spotty in quality, but has a couple of really good episodes (and a couple of the worst ones ever made, like Carnage in C Minor).

Japan continued with G1 with Headmasters, Masterforce and Victory. Masterforce and Victory are pretty loosely connected to the original series and are series that sort of stand on their own. Victory is my favorite of this era.

If you want to go beyond the 80's stuff, Beast Wars is great, though dated looking. Transformers Animated has wonky animation, but is one of my favorite series aside from Victory. Transformers Prime is nice looking, but tends to have better story ideas than executions. Still worth checking out though. Rescue Bots is silly fun. Haven't checked out Robots in Disguise yet.

I have that one and an anniversary re-issue of the original toy. Obviously the original doesn't have the articulation of the newer designs but I still lean toward the original. The evolutions doesn't really seem G1 to me, but it is a cool toy.
Also I have the Galaxy Convoy (which is Armada/Cybertron/Whatever Optimus Prime which is pretty swish. The truck mode is even less G1 than the other one, but the combined robot mode looks really good imho (not mine, but pic related).

Something I'll never understand with Transformers is how much support and dicksucking G1 has. As a show I think it's worse than the shittiest segments of the Unicron Trilogy, and design wise they are all very basic. Beast Wars as far as I remember is the only one that's still worth watching as an actually quality show, and the coolest designs are probably all BW/BM, RID, and Unicron Trilogy stuff.

Another 95 here. Watched Beast Wars with my older brothers in my days as a wee little child, and according to my family my first words were "stasis lock" (to this day I'm unsure if they're messing with me or not). I also grew up on taped of the G1 cartoon, with the movie being the biggest thing for me. Must have rewatched it a hundred times when I was a kid, so I'm pretty deep in G1 despite being born after it.

One of my brothers is a hard geewunner though, he'll shit on anything based on the way it looks, though, and won't see how good it is until way after its over, like he did with Animated and Prime.

The game seems kinda easy at some spots since I managed to get an S-rank on that on my first try, but then again maybe it's because I'm too used to these kinda games.

It's based on the generations toy, which in turn is a slight retool of a (newish) Armada Megatron toy. A shame too since the toy's kinda mediocre.

Hell, a lot of the designs in the game were based on newer toys. Bumblebee's is slightly based on his mini-cooper-esque toy from around 06 or 07, Wheeljack's based on the generations toy released a few years ago, and that exact toy was recolored for the Decepticon ground troops.
