The most baffling part is, the writing/director staff was pretty much the same. Doesn't help that Gotoh's career went sharply downhill after that and Gigantic Formula.

I remember this. I think it's about due for a rewatch, along with Gravion. Those two were basically my first mecha series.
I seem to recall it was an impulse buy I was starting to regret until shit really hit the fan, and it ended up being pretty good overall. I'm kind of looking forward to rewatching it with more /m/ appreciation.

The problem is, Kiddy Grade wasn't that good to begin with. It was fairly mediocre.

Ep 10 was the highlight. But the series as a whole was very bad because before ep 10 we never felt a need to care about them.

I say the ep 10 story saved the entire show. But it is downhill after that. Gonzo was throwing random shit at the wall and hoping that it sticks. But unlike Sunrise they didn't have that much money to waste and that's why they died the first time.

This was one of the first anime series I bought for the fanservice, but ended up staying for some of the action. Granted, I was biased after Newtype USA and Animerica ran a feature on it.

What franchise? The series was kill before the sequel came which was delayed for years and ny the time Satellite picked it up what little was left of the fanbase had moved on. Nowadays Kiddy Grade is only remembered for being Aya Hirano's debut role and not much else.

Didn't the second series have a teaser with quite different character designs and abilities, plus some Minori Chihara song playing at the end? I thought it looked pretty good compared to what we got.

Dunno how they fucked up the actual series so bad.

All I can say, so far into the series...

...I want that guys suitcase - personal warp generator, armor that can deflect military grade cannon, nannomachine repair system, biobed, zoe style vector trap and even has a lighter built in..

..now, if it transformed into a mecha (or at least opened into a warpgate to let it out), it'd be the ultimate suitcase

It takes everything good about the first season shits all over it then kicks it and shits on it once again.
The only way the 2nd series could have been saved in any form would have been at the very end we hear someone yelling cut and we find out we have been watching an in universe TV show all along.
