Karen's reason for fighting was the death of her husband, so she's out as a part of any "decent love story". So your options are some weird thing with Kiki or a Romeo/Juliet sort of deal with Aina. I'd have preferred they do neither, but of the two I guess Aina and Shiro made more sense if you're dead set on shoehorning something in.

As for removing the Aina romance, the entire problems is that the Aina romance is the MAIN GODDAMN PLOT. It's the other shit that's filler, which is the biggest singular problem with the show. Which, yeah, could've had a lot of potential as Tour of Duty with giant robots.
