ITT: Mechs that could be viable IRL
>>
Was Titanfall viable?
>>
I love Titanfall but it has some ugly ass fucking mechs.

No.
>>
>>13552090
nope
>>
>it's grey and greebly
>that means it's REALISTIC
>>
>>13552090
I think so,just a bit. their main purpose seemed to be to support infantry in urban areas and reach vertical superiority as well as enhance firepower, so that gives them an edge over a tank especially if you factor in how quick they can be and their force field things
>>
None of them. I'm serious. The best you'll get is powered armor or a tank with "legs" to help facilitate movement through shit terrain.
>>
>>13552095
They arent all like titanfall's but they are all ugly
except for Syd Mead's

not even close to the only actual one.

But that's not a mech.
>>
>>13552088
Powered armour is probably the best you'll ever see.

Small load bearing quadrupeds like Big Dog make sense and unmanned aerial drones of all shapes and sizes will continue to be around. But large legged warfighting machines will probably never happen because the very concept simply isn't all that viable.

But they're still too big.

I hold out hope that when they figure out how to make self supporting robots with a less than 5% failure rate that can walk themselves around rooms without tripping, that we can get Titan style mechs.

The interface from human to vehicle is there, the portability of heavy weaponry is there.

We just need to put it on legs.
>>
>>13552100
As dumb as this may sound, I've got the idea that mechs could be used in urban combat as support units/effective blockers of corridors, think about that shield as a place where medics could do quick field surgery.
You'd use a mech in the future when you don't wanna completely bombard/level the city, but normal firepower and infantry aren't enough to break the line.
>>
The very concept of a large, legged mech is realistically impractical and unnecessary. Power armor/exoskeletons is probably the best we'll ever get.
>>
>>13552088
The only thing 'viable' about a Titan is its cockpit hatch being styles on real tank cupolas.

If I recall their origins are as a laborer power armor. They became weapons after being a tool of industry.
That's not an uncommon backstory for mechs.

What is it with people on this board thinking that mecha can realisitically ever be quicker than their equivalents?

Labors / Gears and smaller really are like the ideal size for mecha IMO.
>>
>>13558139

>>
>>13558888
They are far more feasible then Gundams obviously, but still impractical as much as Titans.

Just set your shit in space/low grav colonies you "REAL MECHZ" autistic fucks, giant walking tanks will always be stupid on Earth.
>>
The locomotion problem could get fixed by magic future technology. The problem is that a large mech is always going to be a big, easy to hit target. Based on its dimensions, it would require far more armor than a tank to achieve the same levels of protection, and with modern or future targeting capabilities, mobility isn't going to ever make up for that lack of armor. The moment you start getting much taller than a tank you are leaving the realm of viability.

Space/Low gravity doesn't change that, you will always want as small a target profile as possible, and there is no plausible reason a better form factor wouldn't work better.

The real future isn't replacing tanks, its upgrading infantry, heavy armor and heavier weapons while maintaining most of the mobility of an infantryman would be hugely valuable. But even a relatively small mech like a scopedog, or something from heavy gear is too big, and ends up being a tank replacement. You are really looking for something at most 6-12 inches taller than the occupant, that can crouch or go prone to use cover.

Would these designs even be viable? Stable enough firing platforms. Hell, one of them is a fucking single-pilot "tank". The only big issue I could see is resource use and the cost. Boosters solve most of it's mobility issues.
>>
>>13556229
yeah see the problem is profile

the tank needs to be as low to the ground as possible as its much harder to shoot, any thing high up, on legs etc say please shoot me first and presents a huge larger than you can't miss. one guy/small tracked robot with a rocket launcher > mech and a lot less costly

Repair treads.

Build baracades

Loading missile launchers.

Really, a robotic arm just to load weapons is worthwhile. Some missiles can weigh the better part of a ton.

It's an easy comparison to make because one begets the next.

See that cable on the ground behind it? That's to supply power to the unit because a human sized frame does not allow much room for batteries or engines.

The simple solution is to make a bigger frame and drive it with the same piloting system. Once you accept that is viable, a machine two to three times the size of the pilot is feasible.

It's still small enough to be considered infantry augmentation, but big enough to be a "giant robot" by definition.
>>
>>13562294
Because being able to shoot more than six times in a battle is a good thing.
>>
>>13562442
>It's an easy comparison to make because one begets the next.
No it doesn't, you retard. Suits that enhance lifting strength? That's a non-retarded idea. It's physically possible, it doesn't violate any laws of physics and it actually has a purpose. It's still far off from being practical technology because this shirt hard, despite whatever fantasies about current tech you may have.

Giant combat robots? Fucking stupid. From a physics, engineering and tactical perspective it's nothing but seven shades of retarded. It serves no purpose and it's not even physically feasible.

Night /k/ has had some fairly balanced discussions on the topic.
It's the summertime autistics, who fear that their call of duty fantasies will be obsolete, that refuse to even speculate on what comes next.

The worlds changing faster than ever and the brass is head over heels for robotics. It's a matter of time before someone deploys a tin man to combat.
...and the only thing better than the standard robot is a bigger and more capable robot.
