I first thought the Zaku was somewhat silly-looking, compared to the more sharp-lined Gundam.

Then I came to resent the Gundam and its pilot for treading over countless Zaku pilots and their efforts with teenage protagonist powers. It achieved something far greater than I could have expected from anything in the show. Being the dog I am, I identified with the Zaku and sympathized with it, out of the sheer disgust I felt for Amuro and the Gundam.

It's both practical and imposing. An armored, one-eyed monster. The Gundam looks like a dinky toy in comparison.

Its distinct, has character, and up-details/greebles-out REALLY fucking nicely (see the RG or any high-detail render).

I still have trouble liking the Graze and the heads of the Teiwaz suits are too complicated and busy. Where's the monoeye suits? How is this Gundam with no Gundam design elements?

Actually, word has it that the designs for the Zaku and the Gundam didn't really come together until Yas stepped in and turned Okawara's rough designs into something he (Yes) could stand to animate for 40+ episodes.

I think you got it mixed up. A good amount of Zeon's mobile suit and armor designs, along with the GM and ships, were sketched out by Tomino, but cleaned up by Okawara.

I thought Yas and Tomino designed the Zaku II (but Okawara got credit for it for some reason), while the Project V suits were all Okawara.

The Gundam and Zaku look nice fighting each other. The Gundam resembles a samurai or knight, while the Zaku resembles an ogre.

I like the arm shield, the spikes, the mono eye and head shape. They look gladiatorial in a way, and resemble a cyclops in another.
Despite red being 3 times faster, the standard green has a military charm to it, my fav zeek grunt ms is the gouf the blue has a police vibe to it, and i like the police in general

Tomino handled the original designs of MS/MA like the Zaku, Elmeth, and Zeong. Okawara handled the rest of the Zeon MS as well as the Gundam and Guntank and was also the go-to guy for refinement and cleanup, and Yas designed the Guncannon and (supposedly) bulked up the Dom (the original Okawara lineart was really slender looking).

You gimp, I said it was busy because look at how many long, continuous lines it has in the torso and head area, all going in different directions and curving into any angles. This is especially true in Obari's redesign. Nowhere did I say I didn't like the design. Like I said, it's the green that makes it all work. It simultaneously blend shapes (pieces) and accentuate details.

I honestly look at the Zaku II the same way I see the A-10 Thunderbolt II.

Not pretty, but looks rugged instead. Lacks the bells and whistles of their streamlined fighter counterparts, but makes up for it be looking mean.

Seriously, of all of the mobiles suits, I can't picture any other one fitting the image of slogging through miles and miles of jungle, and mud, then slugging it out, and RTB. It just seems right.
