I hope I'm not violating a /m/ rule by requesting something, and I apologize in advance if I am. I saw an anime back in 1981 (best guess). Been searching for it since then. It was a movie, not a series. Aliens invade Earth. Earth is defended by a team of heroes who pilot air/spacecraft that can combine into a giant robot. The aircraft were different colors (of course), but they didn't always combine the same way. The red one (blond male pilot) was usually the torso, but the climax of the movie had the blue one (dark-haired male) forming the torso. Any help is greatly appreciated. I previously posted over at /r, but they suggested I bring this here. I can provide a few more details if it will help.
Pic mostly unrelated.

I'd say Getter Robo but if it was a movie I'm not sure what it could be.
Also you're not breaking any rules by asking what a show could be, only assholes would have a rule like that.
>>13549220
It might not have been a movie, maybe just several episodes strung together. Like I said, It was a long time ago. I just checked the Getter Robo intro on YouTube. That's close, but it's not the one. I'll check through the other suggested videos there. Thanks, anon.
>>13549211
Do you happen to remember the number of combining craft? There are a lot of combining robots like that, so a number could help us narrow it down.

>I just checked the Getter Robo intro on YouTube. That's close, but it's not the one.
There's more than one Getter Robo show
You got classic Getter, Armageddon, Shin Vs. Neo, and New Getter
>>13549296
The old man said back in 1981, which narrows it down though.
>>13549296
None of those have blond male pilots, though.
And most of them didn't exist in 1981.
>>13549211
Could it have been Albegas? The time doesn't quite match up (it's from 1983), but it sounds vaguely similar.
>>13549289
I seem to remember there being 5 (2 arms, 2 legs, torso), but I could be wrong. I know there were at least 3. IIRC, the pilots wore flight suits that matched the color of their respective jets. Blue formed the torso when Red couldn't do it because he had a broken arm. Not sure if Red was completely sidelined, or whether he was just at reduced capacity.

I just looked at Albegas/Arbegas on YouTube, and although the premise is similar, that's not it. They were jets, not robots. I was really into airplanes then, so that part really stuck with me. It might have been as late as '82. I saw it on some cable channel that my grandparents had. I didn't know what anime was then.

Are you American or from another country.
This could also help.
>>13549359
American. Watched it in Mountain Home, Arkansas.

>forgetting G
OP this site might help, yes it is in Italian, but there are plenty of pictures.

Thanks, anon. I'll give that a look.
IIRC, the red jet looked rather conventional, maybe F-15-ish. The blue one was sleeker, and had forward-swept wings. The other jet(s) (yellow, maybe other colors) weren't very memorable to me.
Was it Dairugger/Vehicle Voltron?
Here's some stuff from before 1982 that could more or less be described as jets combining into a robot.

My money's on Combattler/Voltes V, but here's a picture of every mecha show that aired in the 70s. If you can't find it here then I'll bring out the 80s list.
Here's stuff from the 80s.
>>13549438
Thanks, anon. Those are all great finds, but none of them are the one I remember.
>>13549453
Thank you, anon. I checked out Combattler/Voltes 5 on YouTube, but that wasn't it. I don't remember the giant robot very well, other than what I said in my original post.
Not sure how many different people are helping me out in this thread, but I really appreciate it.
>>13549453
Why is Neo Ranga on there?
>>13549470
It's incredibly helpful that they labeled them all.
>>13549470
Anyone got 70s and 90s versions of this? I'd be willing to dump these in the /m/ booru for future reference.
>>13549505
Here's the 90s. I don't know if the anon making these ever finished the 70s. There are also ones for 2000s and 2010s.

Because it's cropped from the full version

There were several Japanese shows that were serialized into an American show called Force Five in the eighties. Gaiking, Starzinger, Dangard Ace, Grendizer, and Getter Robo G. The shows were kind of edited together into an omnibus show. Each day, one of the different dubbed storylines would air.
It is very possible that it is one of those shows.

>Wilkiss
Other than that thanks man!
I'm positive OP is talking about Getter Robo G.
>>13549552
Thanks, Sailor Otaku. Of those 5 shows, Getter Robo G is the closest match to what I can remember. I'll watch more of it when I'm not at work. :)
>>13549586
OP here. Pretty sure you're right. Thanks, everybody.
>>13549604
I think you're right. It has jets and they can even combine in different orders.
The Force Five version of Getter Robo G was called "Starvengers" if that rings a bell.
Here's the feature film version, which might be what you saw:
