***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

It really depends on how well you like other Gundam. The first season isn't bad, and is a pretty good divergence from the usual plot after the terribleness that was GSD. The second season is much less tightly written (with very evident executive meddling) and retreats to more standard Gundam tropes at the cost of a lot of character development, which is unfortunate.

The movie's pretty in line with other Gundam movies: less action that you might otherwise expect, more world-building and presentation of science-fiction concepts.

All-in-all, it's okay to not too bad. Then again, I genuinely think G-Reco is 9/10 and the best anime since at least Turn A, so invalid opinions all around, I suppose.
>>
>>13547002
Definitely. But it's also a show that's best watched with an open mind and free of anyone else's opinions.
>>
>>13547054
They're two completely different animals. 00 is more of a fast-paced thriller than the slice-of-life drama that is Turn A.

It also takes more after western sci-fi literature than any other entry in the franchise. Think the Foundation series, Enders Game and Childhoods End with robots.

I bought a RG Gundam Mk.II 1/144 for my 14 year old son. He has no experience with this, do you think he'll be able to do it? Are there any tutorials for this specific Gunpla that I can give him to use?

>>

I did read the guide, but I ordered this thing a few months ago for him. I wanted to ask your opinion about it and also to ask if there's any tutorials for this specific one.
>>
>>13547240
>He has no experience with this, do you think he'll be able to do it?
He'd find the number of parts the RG has tedious and it might make him hate gunpla. Just get him an HG
>>
>>13547240
> do you think he'll be able to do it?
Some kids can, though I personally would not start off someone with a RG; a HG, or even a non-scale 1/100 would probably be more suitable.

While the RG Mk II is the most stable of the RG's, it has a ton of very small pieces and the instructions are not as simple as easier kits such as an advanced grade or high grade.

>>13547258
>tutorials for this specific one.
Building a RG is the same as any other gunpla, and any more advanced techniques are probably not a good idea for a 14 year old, regardless of his skill.

1) use a q-tip to align and press down on decals/stickers
2) clean up your panel lines. If you insist on using a marker (and I would not, as panel washing is just as easy and looks far better), make sure you go over the bits again with a bit of thinner on a q-tip. There's bad spots on the inside of the left arm, on the face, and on the front of the legs and knees.
3) clean up those nubs
4) fingerprints on the plastic are very obvious; cleaning them and applying a top coat will preserve it much better.

It is, but that's the old HG RX-78-2. There's been a very recent new release, which has some issues (different proportions), but with superior engineering:

http://www.amazon.com/Bandai-Hobby-RX-78-2-Gundam-Revive/dp/B00WW4F8YA/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1448423246&sr=1-1-fkmr0&keywords=RX-78-2+HG+revive

If you prefer a less anime-accurate version, the 30th anniversary HG is also good:

>>
>>13547323

>>
>>13547323
A sprue cutter and sandpaper or metal files will work ok. Hobby nippers shouldn't be particularly sharp, just keep him away from x-acto hobby knives.
>>
>>13547240
Yes, he will love it. He will learn from reading the manual, don't worry.
>>
>>13547323
>don't require sharp objects to build it?
Some Bandai kits have pieces that snap off the sprue and don't require cutting implements, but no Gundam plastic model does.

The LBX line from Bandai is quite simplistic compared to most Gundam kits, but are engineered to allow for pieces to snap off:

No. Almost no manuals for any kit are translated or will ever be translated, since it's usually fairly obvious what is going on just by the pictures. That's also why a RG is not a good place to start for a 14 year old, as they usually have some interesting/ingenious engineering going on.

And when I mean color separation, it comes from my one gripe with the MG head that has no separation for the red under the eyes
>>
>>13548721
M8 MK-II doesnt even have red under its eyes.

They're the old ass 1/100 HG kits, which look like this in less capable hands.
You actually need two sets for the Assault Buster because each mode was sold separately (and now I've got a vanilla V2 to do whatever I want but that's been sitting on my desk for like 3 years)

they're 1/100 HG kits from 1993, floppy partsformers that need some paint but were the only choice for a good looking V2 until the HGUC and MG came out. the wings are from the 1/144 NG V2 kit from the same time, smaller than the P-Bandai wing set but much cheaper and will fit in both the old and new kits.

STarted work on an idea I had for a haunted Grimoire. Removed part of the chest today, going to reshape it and add the detail work, going to remove the face section for the head tomorrow and refine that before working on the first of the scratch built pieces.

I'm going to run LEDs through the kit, too, so I've started mapping and cutting channels for them.

Have some gore.
>>
>>13551410
What makes it haunted? Are you gonna bind a ghost to it?

It's going to have a set of ghost posession style effects I'm making coming out of the damaged areas that will be lit with the LEDs, and will be suspended over a creepy base kind of like a floating puppet. There's going to be a sort of translucent ghost skull coming out slightly from the blown in head unit.

Use it to test different top coats or primers. Or take the parts you like and try to kit bash something, or better yet make a diorama with another kit standing over its wreckage.

Is there a way to cut directly through the face on that? I've been thinking about a custom build I want to make and if I could just cut straight through that, it'd be perfect.

How are the metallic gundam markers?
>>
>>13552193
silver is disappointing, gold is pretty nice, green is especially useful with 00 models, and blue is relatively underused.
They're nice for little details like eyes and stuff, but the paint chips off so easily sometimes.
I can't warn you enough if you want to use the silver for swords and stuff though, it's closer to gray
>>
>>13552193

the green ones are extremely useful because a ton of kits use that exact color for various small details that you really want to hand paint anyway
>>
>>13552193
even when topcoated gold will leave gold dusts if rubbed
silver is the shittiest of shit

>>
>>13551155
Yes, there's pictures on the Facebook page
>>
>>13552351
They're actually pretty good for minor details. They still don't beat actually mixing your own color and painting, but they can be a quick fix if you aren't looking for anything too professional. They do tend to be a little more yellow than the usual Gundam Yellow though.

I do love a good Zaku, and the 2.0 is very good. I've built 4, waiting for a 5th to arrive and I'm sure it won't be the last.

I'm liking IBO's style and the gunpla looks good.

>>13552904
Do the extensive modding. Even if you fuck some of it up, at least you're trying and learning new things.
>>
>>13553487
That looks amazing. I remember reading somewhere (maybe in the guide) that most RGs have some minor issues; does that apply to the GP01?
>>
>>13553460
I know you didn't ask this but a much better SD kit would be Legend BB Command Gundam, Strike Ryubi Gundam or Knight Gundam

Kurenai Musha Red Warrior is okay but it's just a bit under the standard Legend BBs set, one of those would be a better time

As for RGs, the Mk II, Z'Gok and 00R are my favorites, but the Destiny and Astray are both really solid too

The GP01s are great aside from the Core Fighter-upper torso connection being loose for a lot of people
>>
>>13553537
Shit, I started looking at those kits and saw on the "related" area the Knight Unicorn and goddamn does it look neat. Too bad it's unavailable.

I'll go with the Knight Gundam I guess, thanks for the recommendation.

You know, the cool thing about this situation is there's no real downside. Either I try the extensive modding and learn something new or I have an EZ-Sr. I might have to buy a new Graze but those are cheap so...what am I really risking?
>>
>>13553487
Is that the MG or HG?
>>
>>13553826
Definitely the RG.

I own the MG, its almost as old as I am and no amount of scribing or painting could make it look like that
>>
I got an RG Rx 178 titans version from a friend, that he got from a friend. Supposedly he fucked up a bit only a few parts into the building of it (still doing the leg). I can only see that I think he snipped a bit of the rope a bit too small. I've only built a few HGs, so I'm ignorant on this subject. Is there somewhere I can buy replacement mesh rope, or at least a decent substitute?

IMG_2356[1].jpg

>>13553510
Yes. It can be a bit frustrating during the build because my hands are a callused, insensitive wasteland so I have a difficult time holding some of the very small parts; other times they just jet out of my hands from me squeezing them to hold them, and I have to listen to where they land on the floor and hunt them down. The fittings are very tight with some pegs, especially after paint, primer, gloss and topcoats. Also, the joints are tight and feel fragile, so I'm always scared I'll beak it when I'm posing it.

The GP-01Fb specifically has a core fighter gimmick. It makes the torso somewhat unstable, and it can tend to pop loose. The ankle articulation is a touch shitty as well, so it's feet are hard to get flat to pose on the ground with really good stability.

Those are all criticisms that don't dissuade me from recommending it. The kit is pretty much a 10/10. Even if you don't paint or decal it like I did, it looks great snapbuilt.

>>13553798
Exactly. Don't be a pussy. I regret not just going ham on some of my older kits because I worried I'd make it look worse. Pic related is what I'm working on now, it'll be my first project with hand-cut pla-plate. The mistakes look embarrassing already, but such is life.

Even if you REALLY mangle something, you can just make a diorama where the 'ruined' kit is actually destroyed. But a soldering iron for $5, a razor saw set for $10, and you can turn your mistakes into something pretty cool.

>>13553826
RG. All >>13553845 says is true. The old MGs truly suffer in comparison to newer kits, even worse than old HGs in my view.

Enlighten me on thinning ratios for airbrushing, /m/. The guide doesn't mention much on it.

There's some things that are obvious. A 2:1 ratio of paint to thinner just means 1 thinner drop for every 2 paint drops.

But what if your total amount is an uneven amount of drops of paint? Say we use 7 for some reason instead of 10, what happens with the amount of thinner we put in? Would we round down or up?

How do flow aid and similar things mix into our ratio? Is it added after or during the paint/thinner mixing?

After the base coat do you lower the ratio in subsequent layer of paint?

This shit isn't as simple and is still crucial knowledge that I haven't been able to find in tutorials.

this is the kind of thing you worry about early on and quickly figure out by feel

its much more important that you just play with ratios for yourself with your own materials on something you DON'T care about first
