Actually, here's a question. Why did Izak and Dearka stop using the Duel and the Buster? You'd think that ZAFT would upgrade them. Aren't they light-years better than Zakus? (Even thought Zakus are second-generation suits in the GSD universe.)

The Duel and Buster start to become obsolete by the time the GuAIZ is in production, Yzak keeps using it due to familiarity while Dearka doesn't have a spare suit. The ZAKU Warrior is stronger than the Duel in terms of performance, and the Phantom is better than the Warrior. The Duel also had issues with balance and weight in atmosphere that the ZAKU doesn't. They could have upgraded the Duel to match, but it was easier to just give him the new top-of-the-line machine.

It's never said.

For that matter it's also never explained how they repaired Freedom despite it being mostly destroyed and why they stored it in Cagalli's beach house in a hanger than could only be opened by keys Lacus carried so the only way you'd ever be able to get Freedom out is in the very contrived situation of Kira and Lacus living there because Reverands place was destroyed by Junius Seven, but that's another issue.

But presumably they weren't worth the repairs. Buster was heavily damaged and Duel had all it's weapons and it's unique armor addons destroyed leaving it as a very basic suit. And that's assuming Zaft got them back at all.

If Zaft did, there was still no point in it when they had equally speced and better armed Zaku's on the way.

If Clyne Faction kept them there was still no point in repairing them when Yzak and Dearka went back to Plant and they didn't plan on ever fighting a war ever again, only repairing Freedom for the rare chance someone came after them again. Freedom was worth the repair effort. Duel and Buster weren't. On the other hand they could have been repaired but just sat in TSA's secret island base all series because nobody needed to use them.

1. They were still technically enemy MS they had to spend extra resources just crafting parts for.

2. They were already getting obsolete by the end of the first war; when GuAIZs became standard, and for all intents and purposes, were roughly on par with them.

3. By Destiny, the Zakus themselves were of a higher performance than all S1 suits, and had more part commonality with other Zakus being rolled out, making for cheaper overall maintenance costs.

4. At least one of the pilots lost his rank status, and both of them were very nearly court marshaled. The former for defection to the enemy side (even if temporary) and the latter for shooting down a civilian transport (even if he didn't know it was a civilian transport). So they don't get to have their own special MS anymore; no matter how cool it'd be to have them both get upgraded Busters and Duels that used a 2nd Phase G-unit chassis (Impulse, Gaia, Chaos, Abyss, Savior) or a modded Zaku chassis underneath (a reverse Sinanju; instead of a Gundam being hidden under the armor, it's actually a Zaku).

They did have double of the heat whips and arm-mounted beam gatlings, though.
