I used to be in the same boat. Everything I hear about Macross made it seem really stupid, so I didn't watch it until a friend of mine insisted that I give it a try.

So let me do you the same favor. Go back and try SDF Macross from the beginning.

The first few episodes are okay, though one of the early episodes (4, I think?) is kind of painful. After that it starts to pick up. It turns out to be one of those shows where the more screen time the enemies get, the better the show becomes.

Everything you are hearing about in Macross conversation tends to be the really ridiculous shit, the series defining moments. What you are missing is the fact that, after 20+ episodes of buildup, that shit makes absolutely perfect sense in context.

SDF Macross is legitimately good scifi in the classic sense, up there with Henlien or Asimov stories. And the later shows in the franchise build on that, with varying degrees of seriousness.

Right now, you don't believe me. But given that I thought it was the dumbest shit ever before I watched it, and it has since turned out to be one of my favorite shows, you owe it to yourself to give it a chance to wow you.

Wow, you summed it up pretty much perfectly.

When I was first getting into Macross all I knew about it was that cheap Famicom game and "LISTEN TO MY SONG!", so I was basically expecting a campy musical with a lot of beam spam on the side when in reality it is just so much more than that.

I still ended up enjoying M7 even though it did lazily play into my expectations. It's a guilty pleasure.

To go further into why it's my favorite, I feel like 7 was more of something Kawamori really WANTED to do rather than things the studio demanded be put in the show. Because there's too much shit in there that makes a viewer question, "why was this scene here?" The answer is it's a Kawamori scene.

The only real negative I find in 7 is that the animation is extremely mediocre. Yeah they made sure the lipsynch worked for the songs, but aside from that it was very meh. It's consistent though, I'll give it that. The animation is never great, but we don't get QUALITY moments either.

it has been my favorite since i was 7 years old back in -92 ... but i always wondered something. When Roy is killed in the escape attempt, just before Kamjin drops in on him you see Millia rally 2 other quaadalun raus. one of them is shot down. the pilot climbs out of the suit, but her space suit starts glowing and she falls over dead. i have NEVER found an explanation to this. and i cant recall it ever being mentioned in SDF either.
