What makes a "good" mecha fight?

Decent animation, decent choreography, decent mecha design, and decent premise for the fight.

What about music?

&

Can a bad animated fight have "good" direction? (e.g. very BUDGET)
>>
For reals, I always felt that it was 'tacticool' shit.

Like the battle with Norris in 08th, or Bernie taking on Chrissy in 0080. A feeling of tension, and struggle, both combatants hanging by a thread, and only being saved by their split second decisions.

I felt like Geass R1 had good battles too, since they often played out like games of chess. It kept them interesting.

Having one super powered Mech taking out swathes of enemies is just predictable and uninteresting. There's gotta be stakes. A sense of consequence.

Every fight does not need music.Explain what you mean by good direction.

Yeah, good examples are Bones stuff and 0079

Even in R1 the majority of the battles consisted of Lelouch having someone shoot X which would cause every enemy to explode en masse.

Hint not Orange zero physics.

There's different kinds of quality. Obviously, anything being really well animated helps.

The Big O vs Big Duo is my favourite kind of mecha fight. Both giant robots doing horrendous damage to the environment, both robot actually looked like they were big and weighty, and the were taking actual damage. There is a real sense of scale instead of just seeming like "hey it's two guys in armor fighting". Also, awesome piledriver haymaker finish. I like seeing the machines take actual damage instead of getting touched, sitting still and sparking for a second, then exploding.

There's also two standout action scenes in Gundam Unicorn; the Schuzrum-Gallus trying to board the Nahel Argama and the Byarlant Custom demolishing the shitty old Zeon suits. Both are good for different reasons.

The Argama fight is good because it's a zoom in on a larger-scale battle, and it shows the generic nobodies on both sides aren't inept and standing around waiting to get wasted. Both sides showed they can do more and stand around shooting rifles at each other. It also shows an awesome upscaled version of a SWAT-style dynamic entry attempt with the chain mine as the Zeon guys try to break into the hangar.

The Byarlant Custom bursting out of the hangar is a great example of how "one guy blows out mooks" should be done. People are fighting back, but they're obviously outclassed mechanically and skill wise. The Zeon guys make the best they can with old, busted gear but the Byarlant is obviously just way faster and tougher, and the pilot clearly displays fast thinking and piloting skills (grabbing other machines as shields, the upside-down flip maneuvers, slamming the Zee Zulu into the wall both to escape lines of fire and kill the pilot inside).

Basically, make the machines move. Make them actually fight instead of standing around blasting. I know it's expensive to animate, but have less fights if that's what's needed.
>>
>>13518471
if real robot then it need some beam spam but if super robot then a flashy finishing move will do. Kind of like pro wrestling
>>
>>13518535
Considering that it got hit like that?
No, no it does not
>>
>>13518471
It's all in the direction. The camerawork needs to be more than a means to permit the viewer to see what is going on, it's very much a participant in the moment.

Also avoid putting anything near the center of view unless it's damn important to the scene, the viewer's attention is likely to be drawn to the center of the screen over time and if it's a blank space that all the mechs are circling around it can end up looking real fucking awkward.

I was going to say this. It's what turned me into a huge Macross-fag in the 90s. Starting from that sneaky re-entry scene all the way to them becoming butt buddies again. non-stop glorious draw dropping sexy mecha porn.
>>
>>13519144
>draw dropping
Which is apparently what my hand interpret when my brain says "hand drawn jaw dropping", close enough.
>>
>>13518794
No, the interesting part was when there could be some resistance to said mecha. Which did happen in Geass a few times. You've just described a whole two battles in S1, but even then there were stilll some nice encounters on the side. After the mountain landslide, for instance, we got a close combat fight that wasn't like your description at all. Going by your logic though, then almost every Super Robot show and most of Gundam is predictable and uninteresting.

We call it an "outlier."

Shocking, I know.

The thing about 0079 is that it has loads of frames of animation, even if most of the individual frames aren't very well drawn. Votoms is similar.

This means that there's lots of motion at a low budget, and between the age and the art style it doesn't really bother the viewer that much that there's so much quality.

I know they're playing that guy escaping for laughs but his friend just got vaporized and the Gundam literally tore open his Gouf's belly like some sort of bear pulling apart a man. It's pretty fucking scary.

A lot of Aldnoah Zero's fights were fucking amazing. If I had to pick a favorite, I'd probably go with the one where they fight the chick with the flying fists.

These are some of my favourite fights, and they all do something very right. The big thing behind them is that each one has a lot riding on them; they're not just the usual inconsequential MOTW fights, but they all actually matter in terms of the themes, story, characters, or all three.

Planet busting. If I wanted to see a duel, I'd watch yugioh or hajime no ippo.

Being not complete garbage makes it better than a lot of anime, I think. You can watch it in a youtube video and go "looks pretty cool" not "this fucking sucks".

I'd say it's like leftover lasagna not a turd, Being edible puts it in a completely different category than shot.

Time to rewatch this and 0080.

Said it once, I'll say it again. GaoGaiGar vs Zonuda is the single greatest fight in /m/ history. And I don't even like either design and think the plot leading up to it is nonsense.

It was just the most visceral thing. No flashy special attacks, no speeches or talking between hits, just two giant robots beating the shit out of each other with their fists, both taking enormous damage with each hit, pieces flying off of both and all the supporting cast screaming their support as they get snuffed out one by one. Hypest shit I've ever seen.

I think a good sense of weight is needed. My favorite mech fight is pick related and it combines so much of everything said in the thread and more. Robots should be used not just as tools, but as extensions of the characters will.
>>
People are still arguing about the outcome for 7 years.
>>
>>13523880
By that logic Goku vs Superman is one of the greatest pieces of fiction ever conceived in this or any other reality.
>>
>>13524242

Not an actual fight that has happened in anything. Your logic doesn't make sense in context.

The idea that the outcome of a fight is still in question could actually be a good sign of a good fight... But not it being the only reason.
>>
>>13524261
It's fanboys discussing who should've won a fight that very clearly had no conclusive winner on purpose by way of arguing minutiae and presenting hypotheticals. It's on the same level as Goku vs Superman, potentially worse because this actually happened and had an actual result and people still go on about who should've won or who totally won because reasons.

By that logic any fight not involving the MCs is a goku vs superman
