I recall cracking open the first volume of Horizon. After reading the synopsis I had absolutely no clue what in the hell it was actually about (what the fuck is restarting history?), and then I started reading and the first thing in the book after the synopsis was an excerpt from a travel brouchure without any context, and the thing after that was a list of characters I'd need to know, along with any important information about them (that I'd need to remember), some of which was meaningless to me at that stage. And there's also a glossary of terms you need to know.

I mean jesus. Maybe it really is a good series, but fuck me if it doesn't frontload like mad. You can't just drop a load of lore on someone and expect them to enjoy it. Some do, I guess, but usually it's the people who write stories like this.

I should not feel like I'm studying for a test when I start reading the preamble.

The hardest part is getting past the 1st volume.

The 1st volume sets the background and everything, that's why its important, but once the plot gets going, its good.

A lot of things is well-thought out, that's what the author does well in.
Its not just 'winning' a battle that matters, its winning a battle without taking more losses than the enemy that matters, and the battles does a lot of that.
You don't just lose a battle, you lose lives, morale of the surviving soldiers, etc.

Once you get past the initial infodump (which does contain some remarkably interesting information; it's just a hell of a lot to process all at once), the series is great.

Really, I'd almost recommend starting with the anime. It makes for a fairly good introduction to the world, characters, and plot. And because it doesn't infodump as heavily, it's faster-paced and easier to digest.
