He is in fact losing his mind. Given what happened in ZZ, apparently Scirocco basically pried Kamille's mine waaaaaaay open in an attempt to destroy his mind completely. The actual result of this is that, for Kamille, the normal world is all but obscured by all the trippy newtype sensations flooding his mind so he basically sits there like a cat staring at things we can't see.

Now supposedly the original ending was that Fa responded to Kamille's delusional rambling about heat and not being able to get out of the cockpit and opened it from outside without knowing that he'd taken off his broken helmet. I can't confirm that, of course, but after rewatching Zeta it does seem like that was supposed to be what happened. Fa just bursting into tears because Kamille sounded light-headed just didn't really make sense. Her accidentally killing him by opening his cockpit would explain that.

But then we wouldn't have him being all Newtype Jesus in ZZ and I liked ZZ.

It's one thing to enjoy ZZ, it's kind of fun in places, but Moon Moon? Come on, it's just too fucking dumb. Everyone forgot they were in a colony within 50 years? It goes beyond goofy and straight into fucking terrible. How it made it into the show without anyone pointing out it makes no fucking sense at all is beyond me.

That would have made an already brooding drama especially depressing (almost on par with Ideon).

I imagine Tomino pulled back on the grimdark just for the sake of ZZ not appearing any more jarring in tone than it already was.
