Was this the only thing Makoto Kobayashi ever directed? The fact they built a mech in real life just for this 24 minute short blows my mind, & I feel like I'm missing something behind the scenes.

I wish someone would subtitle the making of documentary towards the end of the OVA. I really want to see if they had anything to say about it's construction.

Very much so. Moebius was the inspiration for a lot of Japanese designers and artists of the 80's. Kobayashi, Nagano, Miyazaki, Shirow, the works.

He's done Last Exile designs and something else well-known if I'm not mistaken. Best and unique Japanese artists are not in demand in anime industry.

Interested in this since I've liked his art of the Gundam franchise, but everyone keeps mentioning Moebius. Could someone please clue me in on what Moebius is? There are several instances of fiction with that name, so I didn't want to pick the wrong thing and be mislead. Thanks!

real name of Jean Giraud.

He's done a lot of amazing work, including sci-fi fantasy and a variety of other things.

He's a really talented guy and you should check out his work.

I don't think it is. I think its typical nostalgia whining. The reason why there was only one episode of Dragon's Heaven made was because hand drawn art takes forever.
I dont hate the original DH animation, it is great, but it was not drawn as good as Kobayashi's illustrations. This "charm" is nostalgic bullshit that people say, but something modern with Kobayashi involved in the computer process would be cool to see, too. I'm not trapped in the past.

I don't think Moebius's art style transfers well to 3D, but feel free to post some similar examples in 3D. I've never seen something like this or Nausicaa done in 3D before.

Range Murata did the character designs. The mechanical designs were all Kobayashi -- you can see tons of his works on it in his "Hyper Weapon" books.

Kobayashi also did "ICE" and the mecha designs from Trinity Blood.

was this Kobayashi's passion project? I still can't get over them building a mech for this. Does anyone know if anything interesting gets said in the post OVA making of scenes?

He did the Giant Robo OVA, Gankutsuo, Last Story, and other stuff. He actually ends up doing a lot more clean Art Deco stuff for gigs than the greebly, organic work you see in his models.
