To be precise, "mecha" is the Japanese word for "machinery." (Not "machine"; that's "kikai.")

However... the definition of "mecha" in English is somewhat elusive. Personally, I've settled on the definition of mecha as "limbed machines".

In terms of 4chan, though, /m/ is "sci-fi technology."

Anything heavily mechanical or robotic, with an emphasis on high tech stuff. This includes classical mechs (your Gundams, battlemechs, AT-ATs, ED-209), powered armour of any stripe, star-, air-, land-, and regular ships, androids and gynoids and adorable spider bots that want to eat your civilization, and tanks and tank-like substances. The way I see it, mecha is anime in which a one of the major plot devices is machine technology used to tell the story. Usually giant robots and power suits, but not limited to them.
