Well I wouldn't say I hate it so much as I think it has certain issues balance a tone and with it's overall pacing. Mostly in regards to the first series.

It wants to do too many things like serious war drama and wacky high school romcom hijinks and really can't balance the two.

I mean with lunatics like Gauron running around and Kaname KNOWS this it's really hard to take her oh so wacky outbursts when Sosuke overreacts or has trouble adapting to normal life.

I mean jesus fuck I only watched the show and Id want to high in a room and hope he never so much as inhabits the same hemisphere as me

1. The fights only seem to rely on who has a Lambda Driver. So only one or two characters matter. The rest don't. They can literally just not be there on the screen. Other robot shows do this, yes, but it just felt so blatant in FMP.
2. The juxtaposition between seriousness and wacky comedy just causes whiplash. The humour/action isn't really blended well and draws you out.
3. I don't like school settings with my robot shows. It can work for me in some cases but not in general and not in this case
4. Much of the humour revolved around one central gag: Sagara is a child soldier and doesn't understand contemporary Japanese teenage society. This grew old fast and what grew VERY old was Chidori getting angry or beating Sagara because of misunderstandings DESPITE SAGARA SAVING HER LIFE REPEATEDLY AND DESPITE THE FACT SHE KNOWS HE'S A COMBAT AUTIST WHO LITERALLY DOES NOT KNOW BETTER KEEPS BEATING THE SHIT OUT OF HIM. I hate that kind of humour. It's not funny for me. It's awkward and uncomfortable to watch.

The show had its moments, but it shined the most when you got away from the key elements of the show. If the show is best when the main characters and plot points aren't on the screen or involved, it's not a good show.

I will however cap this by saying this is all subjective. I wanted to love this show and I went in trying to love this show. But ultimately, half-way through the first series, I was just forcing myself to watch and it wasn't fun for me. If you liked it, more power to you. But I'd rather watch Patlabor or Gasaraki seperately, not both at the same time.

Countermeasures to Lambda Driver is practically made after TSR. And Sousuke keeps losing for about 4 novels straight. So, new FMP series shouldn't have any of that.

There's hardly any of Kaname's bullshit and the entire conflict mostly revolves around Sosuke's inability to control the Lambda Driver. It's a jack of all trades but master of none of them. Its not a good mecha anime or a gripping military drama, they abandon the school aspect entirely in the second half and it juggles between being "realistic" and pure fantasy.
