Honestly, Guntank is pretty much everything wrong about mechs and everything wrong about tanks in a single machine. Reminder that the Guntanks one flaw, the inabiity to turn at the waist/turret, was fixed in the mass production version.

The Guntank, in any case, has uses as a heavy gun carrier, assault machine, and utility vehicle. Zeon made Zaku tanks for a reason, not just because they happened to have wrecked MS and Magellas.

Hell, the Guntank really shone on several occasions, such as agains static emplacements M'Queve has established. The Guntank was having no trouble, up until Ral and his men arrived.

Gunkank also has some really nice descendants.

Problem with the Guntank is that everything it can do can be done better by the White Base's guns. All it really served was to draw fire from the other suits. If you remove White Base from the picture then the Guntank all of a sudden becomes vital.

You need that extra space to store propellant anyways though so it works out. Don't think of them as legs but as fuel tanks that can be used for AMBAC. Just like how larger fighters like the F-15 are faster than smaller fights like the F-16 despite being twice the size. Thrusters, especially those used on space craft have a thrust-to-weight ratio greater than one, otherwise we still would not have gone into space.

Can't say I enjoyed any of the Guntank iterations or descendants up until the Loto and F-50D. Both of which look like more of a tank or actually functioning MS respectively.
