The disappearance didn't even make sense in TTGL. If they are pure evil they run the risk of being even more dull and less compelling then Carol or Ver in G. and the only reason why Ver worked was because of his dynamic with the rest of FIS. The HAM that both voice actors brought to the characters did also go a long way, but there is only so much a voice actor can do.

Sure they could do a good job of acting it but the script itself would be more shit then GX, because Carol was supposed to be the unsaveable villain and look what we ended up with. The idea of a Ska-singing male Geah enemy isn't a bad one, just that going farther down the deep end and deliberately trying to make them evil is bad because if they're saved it becomes stupid due to being completely evil and if they aren't it exposes the assholery of the main cast when they save all the antagonists, even the ones who we see massive amounts of pain and destruction caused directly by their actions CAROL but then don't save other ones. After GX, something like that is almost assuredly a no-win scenario unless it actually ties in with the plot and leads to Hibiki FINALLY growing and fixing that part of her morality to be more practical.

Next season would probably have potential were it to be other well-intentioned enemies who are more the "sacrifice one to save ten" mentaility and accuse Hibiki and SONG of missing the forest for the trees. The only issue there is how do you get a conflict going on? There are ways, but the ones I can think of would be things that wouldn't structure themselves well for a show like Symphogear, or would be inconsistent with the actions the characters have taken so far.

Ideas for how to get the two sides fighting if they have the same goal but alternate methods.
Let's assume Noise attacks are what they're dealing with, or at least something similar.

First idea is that the Gears would try and reduce stray attacks while the antagonists would prioritize killing Noise quickly, even if it causes collateral. Which is kind of inconsistent since very rarely have the Gears made an effort to protect civilians over killing Noise unless they're untransformed. The only times I can think of it happening would be when Chris saved Topdad in GX11 and Kanade protecting Hibiki at the cost of taking a hit. Fact is that in the Hero genre, fight scenes are always conveniently empty or if they aren't they're quickly emptied because people aren't stupid and they run away from that stuff.
The second would involve more political basis and conflicts that aren't simple fights, things like government wondering which organization they should fund which leads to them competing over that. Whatever the case, the option that is most in-character involves lots of talky bits and that's not really good for an action show.
Or they could just do the Kabuto route where both sides say, "I'm better than you, this kill is mine. If you don't back off I'll kick your ass WHILE kicking the monster's ass" but it isn't really the kind of thing I imagine would fit with Symphogear.

Blind forgiveness was never a theme of the show. They always reached out to people and tried to communicate to understand them. THAT was the theme of the show. Unconditional forgiveness is literally the most juvenile idea you can put into a story, and the childish wish fulfillment Kaneko had going on with his dead father bled through in GX. In season one, Chris was forgiven by the other characters after they spent the entire show trying to understand why she was fighting. Once they'd reached out to her and communicated (the real theme), she slowly became one of their allies and they forgave her. Even after they forgave her because they were able to understand her horrible circumstances and reason for fighting, she didn't forgive herself. That was a theme that was focused on throughout G as well. "When is it ok for me to allow myself to live a normal life given the mistakes that I've made in the past that hurt other people?" In G, FIS weren't nearly as well developed as Chris was, but it was still the same idea. They presented as enemies, we learned they had their own reasons for being on that path (and that they were manipulated as children as well) and their road to forgiveness had them realize what they were doing was wrong and then work to correct it. Topdad was a fully grown and (supposedly) mature adult who'd already undertaken the responsibility of having a family. There was no grey area with him or complex motivations or reasoning to understand, it was cut and dry. "I'm a bag of shit and I'm going to run away instead of standing by my family while they face a problem that is in no conceivable way anything they brought upon themselves." He completely shit all over the theme of forgiveness, and utterly raped any sense of weight the series had behind those emotions for future installments. If they're willing to give it away to literally anyone, why the fuck should I care?

Again, what courage? When did he attain it? He was a complete scumbag who spent years running away from reality, and then suddenly a character song kicks in and he's risking his life for her? He didn't attain courage, it fell out of Kaneko's ass and landed on his head. Tsubasa attained the courage to try and live her life without the person most important to her by her side. She went through hardships and trials and gained new comrades and eventually realized that although it was hard, she had to keep living because there were still things left for her in the world. Maria had to attain the courage to pick her ass up off the floor and out of the fetal position, and to actually become useful. This was difficult for her, because she didn't know how to be useful and accomplish her goals. Her feelings of helplessness were exacerbated by Ver (and to a lesser extent, Mamu) who essentially took control of her actions away from her and decided everything for her. This ended with blood on her hands, but at the end of everything, she found the courage to own up for her mistakes, and to help people the way she wanted to. Topdad started off by drinking, beating his family, running away from fucking children who he was asked to escort away from danger, telling his daughter it was too hard to apologize (mind you, even at the end he never said it) and then I'm supposed to believe that in a single scene he pulled a 180 and found a heart made of shining gold courage because the plot literally bent over backwards to hand him redemption on a silver platter? "Here you go topdad, just do this one totally dangerous thing that doesn't have a 0% chance of actually hurting you, we'll play a shitty montage, and then everything will be heiki hecchara."

And this is the theme that he raped, killed and then raped again the hardest. From the very start of the series we were introduced the idea that the characters didn't all have perfect families, and most of their families weren't the typical "standard" family unit. Hibiki had her mother and grandmother who worked themselves to the bone to support her, and then she had her sunshine. Miku was an unwavering beacon of support for Hibiki and was the only thing that kept her somewhat grounded in reality for more of the series. Hibiki is so fucking useless without Miku that she couldn't figure out "Fighting people doesn't mean I hate them and want to kill them, but rather, it means that I want to stop them from hurting others or doing something they'll regret and that I want to calm them down so I can reach them with my words." Despite all of her experiences lending themselves towards this she was completely unable to realize it without Miku there to hold her and and spell it out for her. Next up is Tsubasa. Her biological father didn't care for her at all, and then the one person she found comfort in died in her arms. She had to learn to share share misery and joy with people she either hated (Hibiki) or people she thought hated her (her "father"). Her adoptive father had his wife NTR'd by his own asshole father, and it's understandable that he'd have mixed feeling about the kid. Despite this, everything he did was with her best interest at heart, and by the end of GX they reached an understanding and he's continuing to support her chasing her dreams, but now he openly supports her and they're pushing through all that shit together.

As for Chris, her parents were kind-hearted people who were murdered in cold blood by the very people they were trying to help. After their deaths, Chris grew up alone and cold until she was picked up by Fine who gave her a sense of belonging and used her twisted love to distort Chris's desire to end war into a war machine to further Fine's selfish goals. Chris was then picked up by Genjuro, who went to the ends of the Earth to help that poor and lonely girl. His very existence was one of the most powerful messages in the show, and he is literally the antithesis of everything that topdad is. He introduced the ideas of what it meant to be an adult, what growing up was like, what it meant to take responsibility and how you should take it. He solidified the ideas that actions were more important than blood ties you don't have any control over. He became a real father to Chris, and a mentor/father for Hibiki, and despite not being perfect, he always tried his best to show them love, support and guidance. What did topdad do? He got priority over fucking everything to the point that Genjuro and Miku had no presence by the end of the series. 2 of the most important characters thematically were erased, and for what, what did he do to "share burdens" like you claim. The closest they came to that was that horrible flashback scene where Hibiki remembered how the magic words alwas helped her. What that scene didn't show was how those words were actually a crutch after he ran away, and how she used them to run away from and deny reality. "Hibiki, you need to face the world and grow up. You can't live in your delusional ideal dream anymore!" "Nope, everything is heiki hecchara!" Not only did topdad not share her burden, but he actively hindered her from facing it at all.

Just suffice to say that it kinda depends on what you take out of the scenes. If you assume that GX was supposed to be the end, yeah, it kinda sucks. I would argue nowhere near as badly as Carol's redemption, still, since that one is kinda everything you just said but worse. If you think of it as the beginning of his attempt to redemption, it's an easier pill to swallow.

Just because he ain't a shining beacon of morality doesn't mean he can't display the themes. Just that he shows them in different ways. He's much like Hibiki in that in order for him to start making legitimate steps towards self-improvement, he needs someone to have his back - in this case, it's Hibiki. If you want your non-standard family unit so badly, there you go.

The question is what do you do with it now that it's happened? Do you make it a small subplot in the next season to try and clarify things or make Topdad more likable? Do you push it into the background and say, "Yeah, things are working out but that plot isn't really interesting so we'll just ignore it"? Or do you backpedal and make it entirely pointless?

Also he didn't get nearly as much screentime as you said he did. If anyone stole screentime from Genjuro, it was Elfnein.

Terms like "headcanon" are really empty. Hibiki says the "first step" in episode 11 is being assertive. Not the finish line, the first step. The way the last scene is framed, well, it's got next to no dialogue so it's kind of up in the air what it's supposed to mean since Katsumi didn't say anything about it as far as I know and there's no keyword but given Hibiki's line, he's only started to fix things.

The main point you made is that he was "given" a redemption and simply that he didn't "earn" it but, y'know, "first step". He doesn't show the themes explicitly, but shows how Hibiki has learned the themes. After all, this is the first time Hibiki's actually talked to someone, they talked back, and things worked out fine for both parties.

It's a non-standard family unit because the daughter is the source of strength and support instead of the traditional idea of the father.

The overall point is that you can't say that the themes of the series aren't there. We give everyone else a pass because "well it's GX's shitty writing" so I'm sort of more inclined to blame that first. Author intent is kind of key and if Kaneko wanted someone who completely betrayed the themes of the series, he could do it, but no matter how crazy he's gone he certainly wouldn't keep them around. I think he just poorly conveyed it.

I'm one of the first to say "GX had more than enough time to do everything it wanted to a suitable degree and it wasted it" but I really think that this is a case where it was the time crunch that hurt it, as well as Kaneko leaving too much to implications when he should've explained them and explaining things that would've been fine being implications. Kaneko was very clumsy throughout GX's writing as a whole.

And c'mon, you know that GX is getting a sequel. Even as the worst season it was the most profitable by far and the epilogue clearly had left obvious hooks. The only question is when. So when that time comes, just know what you want.
