IBOs setting has "Nano Laminated armor" which is implied in the model kit manuals to make beam weaponry innefective to the point where its not worth using, and seems like it makes ballistics much weaker over a distance as well (Biscuit commented that at the range they were shooting from they shouldn't be able to penetrate the nano laminated armor on barbados). Basically physical melee weapons are the most effective method of damaging enrmy MS.

I wonder if we're supposed to look at mobile suits in this continuity as more akin to tanks than fighter jets. The fluff thrown around about NL armor and how there's a tradeoff between range and penetration brings to mind tank ballistics regarding AP type projectiles.

Though perhaps it can be dated as far back as the middle ages where you had the back and forth between armor and weapons trying to break through that armor. Gusion's hammer might as well be the warhammer to nano-laminate's surface-hardened armor.
