They look more like mounted beam cannons.

Handheld gunpods have always been iconic in protagonists VFs. The lack of one just makes a VF feel empty if it doesn't have something else to compensate. The fact that the battroid mode just looks like VF-25 with minor differences doesn't help.

I'm not digging the new VF. Feels more like a fan creation based on the VF-25 than the next step, much like the Chronos.

Actually, there have been a fan creations that I thought looked better than this, at least as far as far as VF-25 wannabes go.

No, I'm saying that if Kawamori was just going to use the VF-25 as a base for everything at this point, he shouldn't be subtracting content from the design to do so, even in exchange for other weapons. Durandal didn't, and even though it was a bit busy-looking, it definitely was a complete-looking, solid design.

I don't understand though, it's nothing like a VF-25. The transformation is completely different, really the only similar bit is the upper torso. If anything the proportions in battroid look closer to the 171 than the 25.

>Shinsei/LAI ever losing design competitions
>Shinsei/LAI ever pumping out anything but hero valks
>General Galaxy ever pumping out anything but antagonist valks
I know that Shinsei's valks are the ones most frequently mass produced and in greater numbers, but they're usually the hero's valk which means they're usually the ones that end whatever conflict is going on in a particular series.

I mean, even if Galaxy valks are generally higher spec'd...they all get limited production runs and/or get turned into super special covert forces valks. Why even compete against Shinsei/LAI if you almost always get a secret contract for special forces for the valk you're making? I guess you can say they're always ahead of their time, but a lot of the extra features on their valks are specifically what make them ineligible for mass production in the first place.

Oddly, Macross 30 showed us that there was a special forces YF-29B (Shinsei) and Frontier showed us that NUNS was incredibly cheap when they decided to haphazardly throw together the crappy cannon fodder VF-171(Galaxy) for mass production.

I want to go out on a limb and say that GG went out of business after the Frontier fiasco considering they were (unintentionally or not) backing the cyber cabal. So that's my guess as to why they went back to the Sv moniker. However the Draken III SCREAMS GG design elements, so who knows.

No, he's right. Kawamori's kind of like Kojima and Tomino in that he's kind of at his best when he has someone over him to tell him his shit's all retarded. While his characters are good, his ability to weave a story is too heavily reliant on a bad habit of his, in this case; his fetish for idols. The faggot won't even try other genres of music unless somebody tells him to.

His best strength is in mechanical design. I don't think he's ever made a mecha I didn't like.

This. Macross was at it's best when it was about culture and the profound effect it has on alien life forms that had no exposure to such concepts, and the music was the vehicle for expressing that theme. Nowadays, the theme is still intact, but the music element has become the star of the show, to the point where it gets more and more commercialized and soulless in each entry. I can't really speak for Delta yet, but from the looks of things, it's the worst offender yet, with not one or two idols, but two idol GROUPS specifically tailored to two separate audiences for mass appeal.

Part of me wants to blame market trends and Japan's laughably bad taste in storytelling tropes and their terrible modern pop culture that, and I hate to use this god awful word, objectifies people far more ridiculously than any other culture could hope to, but deep down, I know Kawamori's just as immersed in that bullshit as his target audience.

I think that's why I can't being myself to hate Macross Zero. The quality of the show itself was meh, but it felt independent of marketability and didn't faff the fuck about when it told it's story. It had a narrative to get across and didn't let anything get in it's way.
>>
>>13427045
I just watched the first episode and Zero really didn't seem that bad. Why do people hate it? Does it get worse later on or is it just because of the general dislike around these parts of CGI?

That's pretty much my opinion in a nutshell. I first got into Kawamori with Armored Core, enjoyed Eureka Seven, then enjoyed Macross. It wasn't until Frontier's run that I learned they all had the same mechanical designer.

When I found out that they were all done by the same guy, mind = blown.

If you live in America, Europe or Australia, and the chances are, you do - then you have no right to be talking, because all of our taste in storytelling when examining broad trends contains just as much shit and our worship of celebrity incites just as much objectification. Does the concept of stealth not exist in macross? Does macross have an equivalent to minosky particles or something?
>>
>>13427326
>stealth
>when you're going fast and dropping 15 missiles on every enemy
>>
>>13427326
All Valkyries have an active stealth system or a passive stealth system in the case of the VF-17.
>Active Stealth
>A type of stealth technology that directly interacts with the electromagnetic radiation of radar/cross-dimensional radar to avoid detection. Active stealth systems can be built on any type of variable fighter and do not require the variable fighter to be shaped in any specific manner like passive stealth. The first variable fighters featuring an active stealth system were the VF-0 and SV-51 deployed in 2008.

>Passive stealth
>The technology that uses passive techniques to protect a vehicle against detection via radar. Passive stealth systems can employ radar absorbent materials on the hull of a vehicle or the hull can be shaped in such a way that it reflects radar signals away from the radar return detectors (aka Low-Observability). The VF-17 Nightmare is an example of a variable fighter designed for passive stealth.

Absolutely true, but I'm ragging on Japan's pop culture because of how obsessive they get about their celebrities, idols in particular.

In becoming a celebrity in the west, you sacrifice a level of privacy and you have to keep up appearances in public and be careful about what you say. It's bad, but manageable in most cases unless you actively court trouble like Bieber or Miley. Even if you fuck up, a simple public apology can usually solve or at least mitigate the problem. Or your like Jeremy Renner, and you're mostly immune to it because you don't give a shit and the people you "offend" just have to deal with it. Either way, you're entirely correct in your statement that celebrity worship is a shallow trend in society, and I imagine it makes being a celebrity a colossal pain in the ass.

In Japan, however, being an idol is ten times worse. A simple date with a random boy can absolutely demolish your career simply because obsessive fans will lose their minds over it. You can no longer be the object of people's fantasies. That's why I used the word "objectification," because Japanese idol culture is far, far more literal in that sense than the common interpretation of the term. It's disquieting when you consider how creepy idol culture can get. It's part of why I dislike the increasing level of music idol worship in Macross lately; it's glorifying that trend. Sure, the original Macross touched upon it with Minmay, but it was all on the level, and there wasn't half an episode dedicated to getting back her unwashed panties from a bunch of horny schoolboys. She was a vehicle for the show's theme, and a love interest for the main protagonist, not a caricature meant to sell pop music and inspire lewds.

It's not sad. Once the sky is free of planes, there are no missiles to harass our tanks. Mechs immediately become a thousand times more viable, if still impractical.

And then once we develop anti-mech and anti-tank lasers, all we're left with is burrowing tanks/mechs and underwater vehicles.

>>13428084
If you're talking about an energy weapon that utilizes charged particles, like an electron beam, it would be possible to interact with that using particles of an opposite charge or a field that scatters the electron beam's cohesion, like with a powerful magnet. But photons aren't charged. Photons moving through a medium can charge other particles, but they themselves remain uncharged.

The only way you stop a laser is by being far enough away that the atmosphere scatters it sufficiently, or throwing something solid up in front of it. Clouds of particles are not as effective as a solid mass, either, so we can kiss that potential defense gone. You either kill the enemy laser's optics first or have enough armor that it can't stop you before you do what it is you want to do.

"Enough armor" is not really going to be something you can put on a plane, either. The stuff that stops lasers the best is heavy and expensive and not useful against other weapons. Mirror coatings are right out as well, they just won't work period. Spinning and pitching around like a crazy person is also not going to do much, because the laser and its computerized fire control system should be able to track everything just fine, and weaponized lasers don't so much "heat things until they melt" as they do "explode individual layers of material one at a time". They are drills. Laser drills.

Don't let a laser see you is the big take-away here.
>>
>>13428153
>Play keep away
Apparently they can leave the atmosphere to escape a planet-destroying bomb, reaching escape velocity and beyond effortlessly.
>>
>>13428166
so stealthier planes is the answer?
>>
>>13428166
I read a sci-fi recently where the drives on fighters generated short, rapid gravitational waves that caused lasers to be scattered across the surface of the waves and be redirected. Their goal was basically "fly past lasers' ability to turn, turn off drive, then bomb". Was pretty cool I thought. The gravity tech wasn't very upscalable though, which was why they didn't use it on bigger shits.
>>
>>13428145
Well, we already have anti-satellite weaponry. The US developed the 1MW MIRACL in the 80s and successfully hit a satellite from the ground in the mid 90s. The technology was then quietly shelved (haha, yeah right) after international outcry. China and a few other countries have also recently tested their own anti-satellite lasers on space objects (including a US spy satellite), temporarily blinding them. For the longest time, the US has said it was not developing ASAT weaponry, because that's about as scary to other nations as nukes are (goodbye, global communications system) but they've gone on record now as pursuing it in light of other nations' activities. It should also be obvious that every moment they said "we're not trying to make anti-satellite lasers" in the past was a lie.

Having an anti-satellite 1MW laser in the 80s and 90s rather makes the current weaponized laser system, the 30kW LaWS (a naval CIWS supplement/replacement for destroying mortars, drones, and light watercraft) look quaint, doesn't it? 1MW = 1,000kW. Who even knows what actually exists, but simply isn't being shown off. So future satellite weapons are going to get blasted out of space right off, and possibly even before they get there. Not a huge concern.

>>13428159
I don't know why anyone would want to be a footsoldier in a world with anti-tank and anti-aircraft and anti-satellite lasers. All of those can be scaled down to kill a man, and will do so much faster than they will ever kill a vehicle, because humans are fleshy and weak. The moment you're within line of sight, even kilometers away, a computer recognizes you and goes zap-zap-zap-zap-zap; you and four of your operator buddies are dead in a second, your chests having been thermally drilled straight through with explosive results.

Miniaturizing laser weaponry to be human-portable also results in just as much instant soldier lethality, but isn't going to stop a computer-operated system from obliterating everyone.
>>
>>13428185
All the laser needs is line of sight. If it can see a plane, it can also strike at it (within range, and ideally this range would be "anything I can see"). Unless we can make planes optically invisible across multiple wavelengths, stealth is no safety.

You might be able to hide from radar and other detection systems, or blow up the radar first, which would prevent the lasers from knowing where to look when you're approaching. Possibly. I believe we've already reached a point where anti-stealth technology is outpacing stealth, to say nothing of future developments like...

Passive radar. The problem with active radar is it tells the guy you're looking for exactly where you are. You're both in a dark room searching for each other, but you've got a flashlight you are waving around to try and find him with. Obviously he can see the flashlight, and you're just counting on him having a knife and being far away while you have a pistol.

Passive radar doesn't give you away. It sends out no signals, it only receives. It's looking at all the other natural or man-made signals (like TV and radio and satellite) that are in an area and establishing a map, so that when an object enters its range and those other signals behind bouncing off it (or don't go through it, since they're absorbed), it sees this disturbance.
Imagine that you are in a dark room that is completely surrounded by strings of Christmas lights. You're stationary and laying on the ground, so you're not really in the way of anything and are indistinguishable from other features of the room, like a piece of furniture. But the jet is a man walking around, and you can see every time he walks between you and a light. More broadly, you're both in a twisty hallway lit from many angles by waist-high lights, and he's walking around. You see every shadow he casts on the walls as he moves, even if he's out of your line of sight.

I'm assuming that's why they went back to the SV moniker instead. Even though the SV-262 shares a lot of the distinct design decisions that Galaxy makes, maybe its composed of left over Galaxy engineers?

The older SV series were made by Sukhoi, Dornier, and Israel. Does anyone know what happened to them in the context of the Macross engineering scene? Did they get folded into GG eventually, like most other aerospace manufacturers got folded into Shinsei?

The thing I love about Macross is how the mecha are just one of the elements of a giant war machine. They don't even spend most combat in mecha form.

This is so much better than "muh special super Gundam that can rape armies" crap.

Not true. There are idols and idol groups that have boyfriends and no one cares.

Agreed. I'm pretty sure its the gunpod. It seems sorta recessed in Fighter form which is kinda weird, but I guess you can always just use the twin gunpods during dogfighting.

Can anyone tell if the arm gunpods are on a swivel? If they are, being able to shoot shell-firing gunpods while aiming the main beam gunpod at your opponent would be crazy cool. That would give it more firepower than the YF-29.

However, I'd still argue the output for the YF-29's beam gunpod and twin beam cannon are higher, simply because it has 4 engines instead of just two. I'm betting the beam gunpod/twin beam cannon of the VF-31 is tuned to a lower output because of it. I don't believe that they would develop a new engine that would be as strong as two of the YF-29's engines in just a few years.

Artdink Vita/PS4 game when?
>>
>>13440778
I hope we hear an announcement soon.
Macross Ace Frontier (the first game in the trilogy) actually came out a month after Frontier was over.

I'd personally settle for either:
a) An up to date Macross Triangle Frontier that includes scenarios and mecha/equipment for both Frontier movies, Macross 30 and Delta. Preferably for Vita, but PS4 is fine too.
b) A pared down version of Macross 30's RPG-lite style system designed for Delta's story, but with all the mecha the PSP games had. I'd love that for Vita, but a good looking PS4 game would be hard to pass up.

Either way, it'll probably wait until the series has finished airing. But who knows, they have deals for DX valks this early on so maybe we'll get a game earlier.

Not to mention that, in the West at least, we have a love-hate relationship with our celebrities. Sometimes we have hero-worship rags-to-riches stories about them, but it's just as common to mock our celebrities and take the piss out of them. "She acts all cute and demure on camera, but she comes across as an insufferable cunt if you meet her in person." Is a very common trope in western media.

Macross isn't Gundam, where units get phased out the year after they're introduced. Unless they have a reason to retire it, I doubt the Koneig will be replaced so soon. It's more likely that NUNS just won't encounter scenarios where it'll be needed.

So Macross has been dying since Plus then since none of the sequels were about the beauty of culture expressed through music. I think this is the problem a lot of people like you have with Macross is you just want another SDF and can't handle something different. Music has been used in different ways for EVERY Macross. Deal with it or enjoy another franchise since Macross obviously isn't for you.

Well, yeah. It was mostly space combat. No need for Battroid when your opponents are too far away to target easily with your gunpod/missiles.
>>
>>13457307
Actually, I tend to agree. My problem with Macross Frontier is that it masks itself under the guise of culture via music, but with Ranka's/Sheryl's innate connection with the Vajra and their hivemind state, it felt less like exposing alien life to culture and more like an elaborate form of snake charming. Since they're the only ones capable of doing this, the "culture" aspect of it felt a tad meaningless.

I'd rag on Plus for almost completely removing itself from the "culture" aspect of the musical role, but at the same time, Plus didn't try to be a J-Pop machine selling cute girls in lewd outfits and singles (they still released albums, mind you, but the music was more of a tribute to late 80's/early 90's music than anything tied with an idol caricature) Plus was more about the Planes, and it showed in the love put into the animation, and Sharon Apple felt more like a subtle criticism of the growing idol culture in the mid-90s. I guess that's another reason why Frontier felt so jarring; it glorifies said culture where Plus vaguely parodied it's influence.
>>
>>13457564

>>13457851
I can kind of see where he's going with it; Plus broke from the norm of the franchise, but did so in a way that it became something unique to itself and made for a quality title in spite of the change in direction, while Frontier mostly mimic the original while bucking to shitty industry trends (3DCG animation being the worst of it) and lacked a number of key aspects from SDF that made it so good. I say that as someone that enjoyed Frontier.

It's kind of like the differences between 0080 and SEED. 0080 may havelacked a lot of the tropes that the franchise is famous for, but what it did, it did VERY well.
>>
>>13458064
That's because Plus wasn't a Macross production originally. That's why it's so different.

>>13458184

I personally think that, although the CG wasn't perfect visually, it added to the choreography of the battles. They were able to use the transformation of the VF effectively in battle. The anon with the webms should be able to show some of the clips that did have quite a bit of form switching in a short amount of time.
Every other Macross entry, perhaps due to the animation hell that is rapid transformations, didn't do the rapid form switching that Frontier did. 7 had a lot of battroid mode, and Zero had a lot of fighter mode(Its somewhat justified though, the pilots were flying normal fighters before they were flying VFs so it makes sense that they would use the form that they are more familiar with).

Furthermore, the VF-25's ISC/TO21 improved performance where it is assumed that acceleration of the cockpit at maximum can maintain 27.5G reduction for 120 seconds.

>The Inertia Store Converter, ISC or otherwise known as an inertia buffer, is a device or system that links to a Variable Fighters EX-Gear to ease and reduce the forces of gravitational acceleration (G-Forces) that a high-output Variable Fighter and it's pilot suffer during combat maneuvers.

>The ISC works essentially by temporary converts and stores excess inertia or g-forces, which exceed the limits of the pilot's body and the Variable Fighter's airframe, into dimensional distortion field energy. The ISC slowly returns the inertia/g-forces over time thus reducing the strain experienced by both the pilot and the Variable Fighter.

Short of SDF, there has never been a good Macross plot. Usually it's just a series of silly plot threads and backstory written around the good guys winning through the power of pop music.

It can be fun sometimes, but its further down than the bottom of the barrel as far as storytelling goes.

I think Plus was well-recieved in the mecha community because it was almost exclusively about the Macross's biggest strength as far as mecha fans are concerned; transforming fighters and dogfights.

It is literally the valkyrie with the strongest firepower while retaining speed.

That's part of what bothers me about the VF-31. Even if its weapon container can be swapped for a twin beam cannon like on the YF-29, the beam cannon can't possibly have the same output.

The YF-29's 4 engines give it a crapton more power than most valkyries and the implications for its Energy Conversion Armor are monstrous.

>>
>>13462776
True, but I got the impression that the Tornado Pack was the proof of concept for the YF-29. Especially because the VF-25 itself wasn't built for that kind of output, so the Tornado Pack had capacitors to power the beam cannon itself. Meanwhile the YF-29's cannon is powered directly from the engines themselves.

Also I don't recall reading anything about the Tornado Pack supplementing ECA other than what physical armor it actually adds.

Tornado pack has its own reaction engine built in, presumably that power can enhance the armor if it isn't being used by the beam cannon.

>>13462837
Found what I was looking for:
>Despite inheriting the structure of the VF-25, which has also had an improvement in the Battroid form's strength, a substantial strengthening has been carried out on the basic structural frame of the YF-29, in order to enable it to cope with the engines, which have been improved to a higher output spec. At this time, the energy conversion armour also has double the armour thickness (the combined strength when operating is about four times), and the YF-29 possesses an armour strength greater than that of the VF-25 when it's equipped with an armoured pack.
>>

>>

>gives it a more imposing look
I agree with that.

I feel that the wings not being able to fold up, although it makes the back look really bulky, fits the 29.
The 29 is easily one of the most heavily armed VF that still has good speed and mobility, it screams ONE-MAN-ARMY wherever you look at it. I feel that having an imposing look fits that, and the wings not being folded makes it more imposing.

And you do have to note that the wings, from the external engines onwards, can rotate for vector thrust. If the engine's thrust vectoring isn't enough, it can turn the engines and the wings to bank harder.
Adding another few joints to the wings to fold them up will probably make it too flimpsy. In contrast, the 27's wings can't swivel like the 29's, so adding a few joints to fold it up is fine.

A lot of its the color scheme - I'll go in for a lot of designs if they're orange, and the purple gunpod looks better with a complimentary color. - but I think the head ties the look together better. The more futuristic, alien aesthetic gives the rest of the design room to breathe.

Because in order for the music to be the star of the show, it has to be good music, not generic J-pop idol trash that comes a dime a dozen in just about most animes that come out each year Lion was okay, I guess, but even if the music's good, that doesn't mean the show is, just that it has good music and some cool planes and a stupid love triangle for waifufags to argue over.

As I said, SDF handled the music angle extremely well, due to it's integration with the show's themes in an extremely meaningful and powerful way. Nowadays, it's just there to be there, and the show's antanonists are written in a way that caters directly to the musical angle, which is just plain shite storytelling and makes for even more shite antagonists. The only reason I liked 7 is because the music was fucking crazy good, but I'll be the first to tell you that if you plan to watch it for the story and conflict, you might as well just read the wikia while listening to the Basara's song(s).

Basically, music is both the best and worst thing about Macross. It's great, amazing even, if it's integrated in the narrative in a way that caters to it, but when the narrative is written around the music, then the story angle falls apart, which just makes for a tasteless show that happens to have some nice visuals and an idol for weirdos to fawn over and buy figurines of. If Kawamori can't figure out what about the music made it so meaningful in in the first place, but insists of including it for the sake of adhering to a trend, then I'm sorry to say that he should step back into the design room and make way for a better director with a better handle on storytelling.

Not him, but any orchestral work she's done. Plus's OST tends to take a lot from popular music genres during that time period, and the orchestral work sounds like something you'd hear in some 80/90's action films. Bebop's OST was good, but hardly original outside of a few tracks. GITSSAC is her best work in my opinion. She's at her best when she's singing under Gabriela Robin.

Kanno's a good composer with a lot of range, but her problem is that she gets this range from mimicking other work to varying degrees. She doesn't have much of a "thing" of her own outside of her vocal work. Hiroyuki Sawano, on the other hand...say what you want about him, but he has a very distinct, original style that I can pick out in a heartbeat. unicorn's OST is some of the best work I've heard in anime in ages.

But that's what made it beautiful. SDF was about -culture- as a whole. The Zentradi were a race bred specifically for war with no exposure to anything resembling a culture of their own beyond their role. When it comes down to it, their race was actually really tragic. They're something straight out of 40k.

The music was a focal point of the overarching theme of humanity and culture and how it shapes what we are. Music is a huge part of any human culture and Minmay's singing played a big role in exposing the Zentradi to concepts entirely foreign to them, but it wasn't about her or her songs. Remember the part where Hikaru and Misa were forced to demonstrate a kiss to the Zentradi because they had no idea what love was? Remember when Max and Millia showed the Zentradi warriors their baby that she grew in her body and BLEW THEIR FUCKING MINDS? Remember when a vast number of Zentradi defected to the humans because this new thing called "culture" was some beautiful worth protecting? Remember when they used a gunpod to light a zentradi-sized cigar? All of that was just completely wonderful. God, Macross was great.

7 may have tried to kind of recreate that kind of feel to some degree with the Protodevlin but I don't they succeeded quite as fluidly as they did with the Zentradi.

Frontier just doesn't seem to give a shit anymore; "meh, here's your singing alien hivemind for Ranka/Sheryl to duet to and btw Sheryl's clothes are a hologram."

Did it ever occur to you that the sequels aren't supposed to be recreating SDF's culture aspect? Most don't even try because they're not aiming for it.

Frontier is to SDF, as Godzilla(2014) is to Gojira.
it's ok to remove the message or meaning, in favor of something more "spectacular" because that message will always be there thanks to the original.

Not the same guy, but I've had the same opinion.

It's like comparing Star Wars music to The Planets.

>tfw we will never get a Macross installment that revolves around faceless pilots and their production-grade Valks, fighting the good fight while pretty boy special aces hog all the glory

New to the discussion here, but if thats the case, why not replace the culture theme with something else? Otherwise they might as well just forgo any shitty plot they have in mind and just make music videos with dogfights.

Even Gundam manages to do just fine when it ventures outside of the realm of "imperfect communication" (I'd even argue it's more sensible when it does.) That might have something to do with Gundam having a diverse staff of artists that worked on it, though.

While I'm at it, love triangles are the worst trope in fiction ever. I feel like FFVII is the only story where it managed to be mildly interesting. Kind of wish they'd tone that shit down. All it does is weigh down the writing with clumsy drama.
