IMO it doesnt really come out of nowhere. On my rewatch of Zeta I noticed Char and Reccoa had a weird chemistry, Reccoa starts off very stoic but once she starts feeling like she wants "more" out of life you see her cuddling up to Char a lot more, at one point Char pretty much had to tell her what she wanted to hear to get her to sortie.

Zeta had a lot of little shit like that, you mostly see it in the middle. There's also the "videotape from Hong Kong" Kamille lent the crew and Yazan squeezing some guys balls.

Sayla and Kai have spent a half of a year on the White Base in 0079 and they were trying to find Char after the war (as far as I know, this is the main point of Artesia 0083 story of The Origin).
And Reccoa could know about Kai only for his publications and interviews in different mass-media and she knew him personally only for a few days.

And I like to think that he was working with Sayla while searching for Char and his feelings to Sayla were born in the first half of 0080s. Later Sayla and Kai wrote a biography of Char based on Sayla's memories and new sources of information.

As far as side content like manga/OVA, etc: I think a story about the Junior Mobile Suit competition Kamille entered would be neat. See his start in all that shady AEUG research and looking up the White Base.

A cool background element would be the original test run/impression the Federation/Titans had of the Hizack. How shocked they would be dealing with using Zeon-esque tech. Them not being used to the way the suit piloted since they were previously assigned GM suits. Not huge changes, the overall story is fine to me, I just want more background info on the world and people reacting to it.

War dramas are fine, but Tomino is a cartoon director and his staff has little writing skills. That's why they're creating cartoons, and not working epic Japanese jidageki dramas.

Zeta's writing is absolutely garbage even by cartoon standards, but it is an entertaining show. Just accept it for what it is, a giant robot cartoon made to appeal to kids and you'll have an easier time with people not taking it seriously.

But Zeta's biggest issue is that its direct follow up ZZ utterly drops the ball leaving Zeta feeling a bit awkward since it should have continued but ZZ failed to do it right.

I think you have a point in that Tomino's shows have a lot of craziness that predates modern mecha, but at the same time the term trainwreck is uninformative and poorly used. Not to mention that I'd say ZZ belongs in the same category with Zeta at the very least. It starts out goofier, but that's also in line with Tomino's directorial ways.

Establish Kamille's motivation for running away and being sorta OK with both his parents dying.

Establish why the AEUG which is apparently only 2 ships can fight the Titans whose ships outnumber the Earth Federation.

Don't introduce the Axis Zeon 3/5ths of the way through, focus on the fight between AEUG/Karaba and the Titans, save Axis Zeon for ZZ.
