I actually really like the movie, but they leave a ton of stuff from the series out. and there's lots of talking without much action. That being said, it's drawn beautifully, and the music is great. I'd give it a watch

I just found a copy last week. Pretty much no romance, and little mecha action. But what mecha action there is is pretty sweet. It was cool, but ironically, I really think it'd be great as a series to flesh out what with the changes from the show.

For awhile Nobunaga The Fool was kind of offering that "medieval sword mecha" feeling but it wasn't a very good show.

There was Break Blade and the last Tenchi Muyo series too but nothing in recent years has really captured that mix of fantasy and mecha.

It seems like they did seem to have at least a few regular guymelefs too, there's one guymelef you see at the mine in episode 8, one that isn't for digging like those in >>12506144.

IIRC it somewhat resembled an Alseides, but was more conventional, with no cloak and wielding an ordinary sword.

I've always assumed it was what Zaibach used before the Alseides was developed, now relegated to garrison work, but not something used on the front lines anymore.

It's really hard to do. If you go too far in any one direction everything feels out of place. Escaflowne worked because the mechs were all a collection of gears and winches instead of being something really futuristic, and being powered by dragon hearts geounded them in the setting.

Balgus looks like he IS a melef going by his proportions there. Tiny head, super huge legs and waist. Yea, I know: perspective, style and/or quality, but it's still kind of weird in that one frame regardless.

Balgus was great though. It's just a pity he only had a few minutes of screentime tops. I'd love to have seen more of the guy. Especially what he could do if he'd gotten in to a Melef at a later point. Escaflowne was a fun show, but I wish it'd have explored some of it's ideas a bit more. The implied history of Escaflowne, it's alien creators and all that was especially interesting to me.

But outside of main characters, with Van having Hitomi and later his own ability to see through the cloaking, and Allen apparently being that damn good, nobody ever did seem to win against them IIRC, in so far as conventional warfare, ie; no magic nukes.

We see some individual successes, sure, but overall, it looked like just a handful of them annihilated Fanelia's defenses and wrecked the place, the same for Allen's fort (though they also abandoned the place anyway), in alrger battles Freid's army got trashed, the staging base for the allied fleets got trashed, and in the big final battle Zaibach seemed to be wrecking everybody's shit 'till said magic nuke got dropped on them as I recall. Am I forgetting any other larger battles?

Based on what we see in the show, it seems the Alseides (and whatever exactly >>12515342 is) were mostly hollow hulls filled with liquid metal, which supported and moved the things. If so, it would probably make them easier, though not necessarily cheaper, to produce and maintain than conventional guymelefs, what with the numerous moving parts running throughout the things.

Combined with Zaibach's overall apparent high industrialization, and the fact that we never see them field any standard melefs, it suggests the had little difficulty producing them or at least had a whole lot of time to prepare Though IIRC Folken had some hand in developing the Alseides, the stealth cloaks in particular, and the timeframe of Zaibach taking him in only leaves about 10 years I think?

It might also have to keep a moral high-ground (in appearance at least), we saw little of Zaibach population but many war have been lost because the population simply didn't supported it.

Anyway, its fiction, your argument are perfectly logical, I'm just offering other possibility to explain the statue slightly Quo (it was said Zaibach was feared by everybody if I remember)
