The original aliens were in fact merely trying to prepare Earth for the coming battle against the evil Vegan empire. After the Jaegers are decimated by the initial onslaught they are saved by the arrival of a mysterious unit from the stars.

The alien technology is incorporated into the Jaegers, and now Earth turns to its last line of defense, GypsyDizer, to battle the new menace.

I'd be interested to see solo-pilot Jaegers or even drones, they might be interesting. Stacker did pilot Coyote Tango alone when his partner blacked out, but CT was still a two-pilot machine.
