Disagree with me all you want, but the G1 Transformers movie was far more shocking than both Be Invoked and EoE.

The concept of "plot armor" was completely thrown out the window for pretty much every single character.

Am I the only one who feels this way?
>>
One shall stand,
One shall fall
>>
>>11751793
yeah, you expect that with Tomino or Eva
when Saturday Morning moves to the screen and opens with killing like half the cast it's more of a surprise
>>
>>11751793
I really enjoyed that movie, shame I am not really into transformers anymore. If I could I would get a toy of that huge planet transformer from that movie
>>
>>11751830
I've seen a lot of Tomino shows and quite frankly none of them put this much nonchalance on killing the cast other than Ideon. These characters don't go out with dignity, they just get outright murdered without a single word. And it happens to ALL of them, at different moments of the film, not just "the final battle".
>>
God the G1 cartoon was so fucking shit but the movie was so good.
>>
>>11751857
I know but I never got tired of
>"Decepticons ATTACK!"
5 minutes later
>"Decepticons RETREAT!"

And Starscream, goddammit Starscream.
>>
>>11751831
there's a pretty nice one of a AU Unicron and I think there's a movie-version repaint
>>
I remember I was like, 6 when I first saw this. All I had was RID and Armada, and didn't really have any sense of canon. Holy fucking shit, this movie was intense.
>>
>>11751857
The movie's first third was great. The rest feels like normal G1 episodes slapped together + some minor awesome moments, only with better animation.

It's still very good on average. Also dat soundtrack.
>>
>>11751868
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4c-PdeDx1k
One of my most favourite scenes to this day.
>>
>>11751868
>And Starscream, goddammit Starscream.

By far the most shocking death in the whole movie. We all knew he would die at some point, but damn, not LIKE THAT.
>>
>>11751892
Well, yeah. But he did come back...in what must be the most stupid and hilarious plot arc in history.
>>
>>11751793
The shock value was completely unintentional. The writers had to kill off a bunch of characters to sell the next wave of toys, even said as much in all the interviews.

Maybe that's why Tomino killed everyone in Zeta- because Bandai told him too to make way for ZZ.
>>
>>11751915
This is why all of G1 should have ended with the movie.
>>
>>11751921
I think the shuttle sequence at the very beginning was especially brutal.
>>
>>11751857

I never watched G1 as a kid but I saw some of it as an adult and holy shit the QUALITY on it makes Macross look like Akira.
>>
>>11751921
>Maybe that's why Tomino killed everyone in Zeta

Pretty sure Bandai doesn't have a line of models based on pilots and needs them to die and be replaced with new ones in every new season.

But yeah. Hasbro execs were shocked to discover the fan reaction to the movie, children crying that Optimus is dead, etc. They were surprised that someone could take the death of a fictional character so seriously, for them they were just toy robots.

Just shows how out of touch with their own fanbase they were. I'm surprised Transformers did as good as it did, that thing considered.

Also the fan reaction is what made them turn Duke's death in the incoming GI Joe movie into him being hospitalized/in coma.
>>
>>11751892
Not as uncalled for as Ultra Magnus. Now that was some serious jobbing.
>>
>>11751793
tinfoil incoming...

maybe the execs thought kids needed to be "tougher" for the upcoming wars in panama and iraq, time for a brave new world order
>>
>>11752068
nah, the freemasons made cartoons make wars look fun, like GI Joe
You don't need to be toughened, just conned into enlisting. Tough is somebody else's job. Cartoons are the sales department.
>>
>>11752068

The ages for the kids when they're grown up don't really match though.
>>
>>11752016
Being Ultra Magnus is suffering. Being an Ultra Magnus fan is worse. At least now we have an actual Masterpiece Ultra Magnus instead of an Optimus redeco.

Fucking Wheeljack.
>>
Honestly this stuff would have only shocked me if I was a kid when I saw the film. Going in and knowing that the only reason they are doing it like this was move in a new toy line cheapens it.

Fucking great cartoon flick tho.
>>
>>11760359
>Honestly this stuff would have only shocked me if I was a kid when I saw the film.

You kidding me? I would think most people would be even more shocked when they're older. People already bitch enough about AZ's ending, but this movie shits all over it on pure shock value alone.
>>
>>11760341
I just bought an MP Wheeljack.

It is an understatement to say that its one of the best toys I've bought in the last 10 years.
>>
>>11760422
They're fucking toy robots. As an adult you're more aware of the fact that they're killing them off as a vehicle to sell new toys any sentimental value you have for the characters are only if you're an impressionable child.
>>
>>11752016
But that was the point of Ultra Magnus in the movie, that he wasnt the true sucesor.

And he ended up being a better leader than Rodimus in season 3 anyways.
>>
>>11751943
I still love that bit with Duke.

>gets a big ass snake thrown in his heart

>>
>>11760475
They're not just toys, they're characters. Don't forget that most anime these days is more focused on selling PVC statues of girls than actuay having a good plot. Every show is about marketing.

The way the TF movie went about it is far more brutal than others.
>>
>>11760488
Tell that to /a/ they think most of those anime are legit good.
>>
>>11751943
I wish they had just kept Optimus dead. The show should've stopped with the movie and moved onto the next show.

Not really especially when the violence was bloodless and no more psychical than a Tom and Jerry cartoon. You're being far too fictitious with this.

transformers movie 1986 : 'The only thing worse than the animation is the music!'

'YOU'VE GOT THE TOUCH' the only thing missing was Dirk Diggler in a red leather vest--that would have been less campy.

Ironically neither did the movie since Optimus comes back in S3

They do. The deaths in the movie had no impact because they were bloodless and weren't really violent especially in comparison to the G.I. Joe movie and given the only death that had any impact was Optimus it really falls flat as a whole.

Okay, I guess you never noticed how Prowl's mouth was frothing with his liquified guts leaking through before he exploded. Or how when Ultra Magnus exploded, you can still see his burning remains.

These are graphic, graphic deaths. You're both edgy fucks who probably thought Asuka's death in EoE wasn't violent either because the Eva was killed and not her.

Stop strawmanning because people are calling you out on your bullshit dumbfuck. You see Asuka get her arm split in half before her demise than when Shinji goes up for battle we see her remains for a split second in graphic detail, nothing in the transformers movie come close since none of the deaths are detailed and are handled with "lol he sploded"

>Only because the fans/kids demanded it

The trailer turns into Magnus' body as well. It's because the original Diaclone toy the character was made from was supposed to be an upgrade to the pre-Transformers Optimus. Powered Convoy, as it was called, was an Optimus redeco carrying around a trailer that transformed into full body armor. My guess is they decided they couldn't use that and hadn't really figured out how to make Magnus transform very well, since the figure kind of relies on you putting the armor on the Prime figure.

Has anyone ever done webms of the Autobot shuttle massacre or Optimus vs Megatron duel?
>>
>>11760986
For what it's worth, I agree that they're probably either shitposting or they're genuinely ignorant of storytelling techniques. It's not to say the movie planned for things to be shocking; it's just that nobody realized that kids had grown attached to the CHARACTERS.

If you wanna feel stressed, look at photos of actual people killed in war. For normal people, seeing victims, and knowing it's real, that creates a sense of stress and discomfort. It's different than seeing gore in a horror movie, those are designed to illicit fear.

In the case of the TF movie, or any media where you were made to be attached to a character, the response you get is "sadness".

If they were faceless bystanders, say, in early Heisei Kamen Rider or something that comes out of left field for apparent main characters, ala Madoka or Ga Rei Zero, that's when you'd feel "shock" that the writers would "go there".

It's rather interesting actually.

Considering that before the movie people'd had a 65 ep cartoon that was entirely lighthearted and kid friendly, where no one really died, the villains were regularly routed and the fights were entirely harmless to everyone involved, suddenly killing off a good deal of the important characters was pretty shocking. it's surprising how many TF fans don't know about the Braves series
>>
>>11784140
Most TF fans are in the category of "FUCK YOU WEEBS MUH SUPERIOR G1 AMERICUH ROBOS AINT FROM NIPLAND" and deliberately choose to ignore the fact that the original cartoon was an anime.

The same faggots who worship Robotech and ignore Macross, really.

It looks amazing.

I'm not sure if I should buy it now, and rape my wallet, or wait in case they:

-Release it in a two pack with Victory Leo (or alter the mold to accommodate the combination)
-Wait for a possible, cheaper U.S. release.

To insult to the injury, they brought him back later in the series as a fucking zombie, just to kill him off AGAIN in the same episode.

Seriously, what the fuck were they thinking?
>>
>>11784292
the old Marvel comics killed him pretty lamely too

Looks pretty cool. I wonder if he'll get a western release since he's more or less a Japan-only Transformer.

The shock of the deaths of the Autobots is in the coldness of their disposal.

These were characters with colorful personalities--and they were off'd in a way that, save for maybe Optimus, was completely devoid of romanticism. I actually think it's a better movie for it, although I do know it wasn't an artistic decision.
>>
>>11751847

Hasbro wanted to kill off the original cast to introduce new toys. The thing is, they didn't see the Autobots or Decepticons as characters, but as toys. The suits just didn't imagine that kids would be attached to them as characters that they were invested in. They probably thought they were all interchangeable.

>These were characters with colorful personalities--and they were off'd in a way that, save for maybe Optimus, was completely devoid of romanticism. I actually think it's a better movie for it, although I do know it wasn't an artistic decision.

It's because they didn't have the time to do it. They had to get the next massacre. Otherwize the whole movie would consist of characters dying and people being sad.
>>
>>11760894
Anyone but me ever wonder why Windcharger wasn't a more powerful opponent? I mean his weapon was MAGNETISM. And his foes were sentient computers. Why wasn't he formatting their harddrives all over the place everytime one of the Decepticons thought to show his faceplate?
>>
>>11760527

There was no next show. The idea of there being a franchise of several versions of the show probably sounded insane back then to the Hasbro higher ups.

At it was it was about a decade before Beast Wars came out.
>>
>>11760528
>K-On starting with the underclass massacring
There is one Russian pasta about girls and a big black guy with an axe...
>>
>>11787147
We all know why they did it.

The point is, the result was a movie that was downright cold-blooded. Even moreso than Bay's shitfests. And probably better for it.
>>
>>11788291
Same reason the Benders in Avatar didn't completely murder their opponents via bloodbending, suffocating, combusting, and bone-breaking each other's bodies like the practical and efficient thing to do with those powers.

It's a kids show.

I the sentence was suppose to be:

"I feel like I've seen these ships before"

A joke from his first appearance, since 3 Legislators could combine into a ship.
>>

Why the fuck would they release one of the JP exclusive g1 characters outside of japan, only die hards would know.

I'm aware they released those outside as I own a box set but you hardly hear shit about star saber and the gang

G1 Transformers movie will always hold a place in my heart. I watch it every now and then to nostalgia hard; mainly for the first 20-30 minutes. The deaths taught my young self that like it or not, war causes death, no matter how much you care about the people/ characters.
The only REAL graphic deaths, IMO, were Prowl, Ratchet, Ironhide (even though we didn't really see him get Megatron'd after his heroic nonsense), Kickback (not death, but that head-crushing, man!), Optimus (of course), and Starscream. Magnus's "death" was a bit awkward, due to him getting shot multiple times with no visible wounds, until exploding to pieces...only to be revived later.
While I'm at it, Short Circuit 2 - another of my childhood favorites - did a number on me with the whole brutality thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUQMvlH39XA

>The concept of "plot armor" was completely thrown out the window for pretty much every single character.

That's because Transformers is and has always been a giant toy commercial, just as Gundam is and always has been a model kit commercial.

Best way to push a new line of toys is to kill characters off regularly, and introduce new ones.
Then a year or so later, resurrect the dead characters with a brand new toy.
>>
>>11798093
Except the only character they resurrected, Optimus, didn't even get a new toy (iirc, the next Optimus toy would be his Powermaster incarnation, which would only come out a year after the toon ended). Besides, I don't think 'killing off the entire cast to replace them with new toys' was even a thing in American toons at the time. I certainly don't remember any similar bloodbaths in He Man or GI Joe.
>>
>>11798140
They nearly did it with the GI Joe movie but changed it at the last minute because of the backlash from the Transformers movie.
>>
>>11798093
That's right, don't even bother watching anime or TV shows or music videos or readings books and manga. None of them have any plot significance other than to sell toys or merchandise or some kind of product. The producers don't give a shit about you, they just want your money. Nothing else affects their line of thinking. They're all commercials and you're a fucking childish moron if you get attached to any characters. Fuck media, fuck internet, fuck everything, and FUCK YOU you nihilistic little faggot.
>>
>>11798140
>I certainly don't remember any similar bloodbaths in He Man or GI Joe.

GI Joe film did the same thing, but not through murder. It introduced some new jerks, and pushed the original cast to the side. Only Duke died (which was changed to coma).

I enjoy the movie every now and again but I'm mostly in it for the music and the first 25 minutes. Still next to beat wars it's probably the best piece of TF media out there, though I've not watched anything past animated. I hear the IDW comics are/were good?

>>11810667
yeah pre all hail megatron and most of the shit now is pretty good if you can handle the shipping and tumblr stuff from the idw comics now.
>>
>>11810667
They are good, they follow the story way beyond the war on earth, currently the cybertronian war ended and the Autobots won, Starscream is the current leader of Cybertron and Megatron is an Autobot.

That shit must have been even more traumatizing for kids than his death in the movie.

>Hey kids Optimus is back!
>only now he's a mind-controlled robot zombie who tries to kill his friends!
>has an epic battle with Rodimus where his parts get knocked off
>finally ends up comitting suicide

Holy shit, you'd think the episode was written by Tomino.
