If Prime 3 had a less linear objective progression and a bit more emphasis on free-form exploring, it would have been perfect. They did a fantastic job with everything else in that game.

Prime 3 is the best 3D game, Zero Mission is the best 2D game.

It's kind of wierd that game with completely the same platform gameplay and controls can be so different from the rest of the series, and still be a perfect example of it's genre.

So, whilst it's true you can't speedrun or routeskip in Fusion (if you want that, you get Zero mission*) what you CAN do in Fusion is low percentage runs. Which are BANANAS because roughly 45 minutes in you will be facing regular enemies that take half of an energy box per hit.
Essentially a low percentage run in Fusion means NEVER getting hit by anything ever.

*Which has several such routeskips and shortcuts built in, as well as allowing for several skill based skips which aren't, like skipping getting the tether beam by using Diagonal Bomb Jumps, or "witchcraft" as I call it.

Alien Isolation taught me to never again ask for such things, because honestly it truly is terrifying having an enemy operating on its own terms like that.

I mean, after a while you get used to it and it's rather cute interacting with the AI, but god damn until then it's just stressful. Imagine if the SA-X could break into save stations! It'd be horrifying!

The scripted SA-X encounters also lose a lot of their impact on subsequent runs. Knowing where to expect it takes out a lot of the soul-crushing terror.

I always like to investigate/try "old" things that inspire current good things that came afterwards, and since I was quite fond of the metroidvania games on GBA & NDS (+symphony of the night), I had to give Samus a chance. And I finally did this year and boy I do not regret it.

I played (sadly by emulation) Super Metroid, Zero Mission and I'm in the middle of Fusion. I freaking loved the first two.

I don't know what to do about the Prime Trilogy, since I don't plan to own a WII (it's expensive here, believe it or not) and I'm not sure how accurate the emulation is.

You're able to turn power ups on and off like in Super, which will require new beam sprites at least.
You can encounter the SA-X anywhere even during boss fights.
You can kill them.
When you do you either get the ice beam early or maybe a random power up, not sure.
There are at least 10 to kill, maybe more.

I don't go to /v/ so I'll ask here; was Other M well-received in Japan? Is that what they want from Metroid? Heavy storytelling? I'm not even going to go into the quality of the writing, I just think it's weird how they don't seem to like Prime over there and would rather make something like Other M.

I did. Finished it in like two days. It had a lot of good ideas and was a decently solid game, it just needed to be longer and a bit more polished. I really dug the Marine permadeath mechanic and how each one had a distinct personality.

I'd kill to see her in a sword-and-sorcery-in-space setting. You know, the kind of setting where the protagonist's space rocket crashed on an alien planet full of purple mushroom jungles and blue-skinned muscular raygun-wielding barbarians who only wear a loincloth and a silly helmet. There's mist everywhere, the sky is black even in full daylight, and tigers have eight legs. And the bad guy is a chinese-looking douchebag allied with a space dragon, and the protagonist has to kick all their asses with a raygun that's slowly running out of ammo, and a big motherfucking sword.
Except more 80s, so obviously the blue barbarians have spikes on their helmets, the chinese bad guy is really androgynous, his plan involves drowning the world under hordes of mutant demons, and the space dragon looks like a xenomorph.
And in the final segment the bad guy's castle turns out to be a spaceship and it's taking off while the protagonist is still inside against hordes of mutant demons and the space dragon.

I don't think Nintendo was "forcing" them to go for Donkey Kong. They likely went for it since it had higher sales numbers. Tropical Freeze kind of bombed though, so they'll probably go for something different again now.

The design, in theory, looked OK. Smash 4 shows that with a little tweaking it's sexy as fuck.
But the execution in Other M was pretty bad. Most of that can be chalked up to the horrible lighting and textures all over the place, but the proportions are off as well. There also wasn't enough going on with the suit. Smash 4 has vents and stuff around the place where there were previously just lines. It's why I don't like the Figma, because they didn't even paint in the lines, they just molded them on.
Funnily enough, the in-game Other M suit looks nothing like the concept art at all. The concept art looked more feminine, but was actually a somewhat interesting design.

That thing is still one of the scariest things I've encountered in a game. During my first playthrough as a kid that first close-up made me nope the hell out of the game for a solid week.

As for OP's question, haven't really thought about it. Nothing is really fresh in my mind but for a top three of sorts in no particular order:

- Prime 2
- Fusion
- Other M

Initially thought Prime 2 was bad due to the ammo system but in my second play through via Trilogy it was actually my favourite. Also Dark/Light Suit.

Completely ignoring story bullshit; I had fun with Other M's gameplay and liked the visuals. Deal with it.
