So I was playing Sunrider: First Arrival and it dawned on me that this may not be the first of its kind. Aside from Front Mission, do you know any other mech games like 'em?
>>
for Vidya...I couldn't tell ya. That said table top wise there's a hald dozen.
>>
>Sunrider: First Arrival
Looking at its gameplay video, it seems a bit like a bootleg SRW.

I'm trying this open-source Battletech game but learning all that shit is kinda daunting. Also, I found Titans of Steel which is a bit clunky but it's fun managing the team and designing mechs. I just hate how you need to be face to face with an enemy just to hit it reliably when you're low leveled.

>>11060926
I've only played one SRW and I don't think Sunrider's gameplay is as good. Also, I think the engine is working against it, UI is stupid slow at times. Still, I kinda liked how crazy hard it could be.

Megamek can be pretty hard to learn, but you won't find a better TBT mech game.
>>
>>11060964
Should I be reading the pnp rulebook first? Is it a 1:1 adaptation of the rules? If so, which ones should I read?
>>
>>11060947
When I say bootleg, I mean super bootleg. Most of the assets are pretty solid but the engine looks like it was made in Game Maker in a day or two. A couple of elements like the point defense and missile tracking remind me of Space Empires as well, which has similar combat but is a 4X game and probably not what you're looking for.
>>
>>11060999

Engine is supposedly Ren'py which is primarily a visual novel engine. I guess they really had to do some programming gymnastics to include a TBT gameplay.
>>
>>11060977
It is a direct port of the rules.
I found them pretty intuitive, and had more problems with the UI than anything.
Total Warfare should work, and you can pirate that shit pretty easy.
>>
>>11060977
Yes. That's the trick with Megamek, since it it's basically just digital Battletech, it doesn't hold your hand, even if it automates a lot of stuff so you can get by without knowing specifically how it works, which can create other problems for you in the long run.

IT doesn't have every single rule, because BT has a shitload of optional rules, but the basic ground combat stuff, which is the meat of the game, is all there.

The current core rules are in Total Warfare, and is all you need to play the basic game.

Those optional rules I mentioned are mostly in Tactical Options, with the advanced aerospace options coming from Strategic Operations, and you generally only have to worry about those if you go ticking boxes in Megamek's advanced rules tabs in the options, and usually they at least have pop ups that tell you which book and page they're on.

So I take it that there's no other game like FM and Sunrider out there?

Off the top of my head:
Ring of Red, a PS2 game set in an alternate history that has diesel powered walking tanks first made in WW2, and tromping around in 1960s Japan that's divided Korea style.

But while it's technically turn based, when to units fight, it goes into this real time thing where you actively shoot with your mecha, select special attacks, and give orders to the supporting infantry squads you have, that last a minute or two long. So not quite the turn based your looking for I think, and said system makes battles take a really long time, even though you only have a few units. It is pretty neat though.

There's also a Zoids game on the XB360, Zoids Assault. Never played it, I hear it's decent, and looking at some youtube videos, looks FM-esque, at least in presentation.

If you want to challenge moonspeak, Assault Suit Valken 2 on the PS1 (pic related) is also somewhat FM styled, a big jump from the side scrolling action game the first game was. I've played it a bit, it seems alright, but the language barrier made it a bit of a chore, and I never really got into it.

Somehow, I just knew even before opening that would be the one legged Owens knocking the Daishi off a building to its doom.

>>11061609
There's been a couple utilities and other programs to help create campaigns against the bot.
At the bare minimum, MekHQ (made by the MM devs) at least lets you create and manage a unit over multiple battles.
>>
>>11061660
That is awesome. I'll make a team and have them fuck around the universe. This sounds exactly what I wanted but I have to do a ton of leg work first. Oh well.

There's Missionforce : Cyberstorm, which is basically a Battletech clone with a good interface.

Ring of Red had a rather fun infantry support system.

There's SD Gundam G Generation.
But that's more of a grindathon and collectathon. I wasted 128 hours on World and enjoyed every minute of it.

Nope, you can`t. Squadrons won`t "refill" between the missions. So, the only chance to pull through, is to win with zero casualities... which is near-impossible.
>>
>>11062929
Megamek has bots.
But I don't think simply porting ML to BT would really work that well.
And to make it work well would be enough effort that you'd probably be best just making something from scratch instead of trying to piggyback on MM.
>>
>>11062929

The Princess Bot would do just fine in this case. It tends to move everything into punching range anyway.

I own it, but I do not really like it all that much. Not at all, actually. It was kinda bad. I'm not talking, like, 6/10 let's-over-exaggerate-the-faults bad, but I mean actually bad.
>>
>>11061637
Zoids Assault was a decent game. The most annoying part was how it didn't really matter it the zoid had natural weapons or anything, they all simply fought with their turret mount.

I heartily recommend Ring of Red, however. Sits alongside Front Mission 4 as one of my favorite mecha games. Shame no one else has thought to do combined arms with mechs.
>>
I'm pretty sure Sunrider's gameplay is just Kantai Collection, so.

It does not look so bad and not only does the MC can't do all alone, it looks like he will have a serious enemy in the next episode.

Not to mention that this anime has been giving the "grunts" (on both sides) quite a bit of space so far.
>>
>>11066171
It looks like a Kamen Rider enemy, anon.
>>
Faselei. It's pretty interesting. It's like Front Mission, only you control a single mech and plot out its movements with queued up commands (chips).

>>11066168
Hi there. I happen to be the poster. It's been a long while since I've played it, but everything about it felt very shoddy. The voice acting is awful, the art was pretty mediocre The combat is weird, cumbersome, slow and unsatisfying. No gameplay videos I've looked up seem to be plagued with them, but my particular copy of the game had weird shit like things flickering in and out of visibility.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uT95CythOJ0
Check out the gameplay for yourself, I guess.
>>
>>11066177
It looks like a more cinematic Front Mission. That attack-move they do is kinda cool but I kinda wish the camera would focus on the enemy and show you the damage done.
>>
>>11066189
>I kinda wish the camera would focus on the enemy and show you the damage done.

This was actually one of my main problems. The animations themselves are okay (though as said, a little too slow for my liking), but all you see are your robots firing and waddling about. There's no impact to it.
>>
>>11066195
Oh, actually, at 1:10 or so, you do see an enemy mech getting fired on, but it just stands there, entirely motionless. It doesn't rock back, brace itself, or anything. Pretty boring stuff.

Metal Brigade Tactics is a bit like a poor man's Front Mission. There's no neat battle cutscenes and weapons work in a simplistic scissors-paper-rock way, but I nonetheless thought it was alright.
>>
>square enix had the fucking angle on this shit

>>
>>11066138
You can blame Fatlus for that
>>
>>11066177
That is a really weird-looking game. So the music just keeps cutting out whenever they do stuff? And they hardly even show the robots actually interacting? It's like they had an idea but then they didn't finish it.
>>
>>11062929
>>11062935
Is there an english patch?
>>
>>11066526
I think so, haven't played it myself, but it's available alongside a VN called Muv-Luv Altered Fable.
>>
>>11066526
Nope. There is no patch for M-L Faraway Down. Not that you really need to know moonspeak to play.
>>
Front Mission is the shit. My favorite SRPG series. Although I never really cared, nor beat, the first game. I started with 3 and 4, so going back to 1 where you couldn't fire ranged weapons without being directly next to the enemy was rather aggravating.
>>
>>11066861
Missile spam is at its most heinously useful in Front Mission 1, to memory. It's by no means fun, but it gets the job done.

Before the Tribes part of the canon, Starsiege was probably one of the most grimdark sci fi universes ever.

Yes I know 40k exists, but Starsiege was like, concentrated assholery instead of universe-scale assholery.

The problem in M-L: Faraway Dawn is that you can successfully complete mission, to find out, that you have no forces left to live through next one. BTW, fun fact, it is easier to play on "hard" difficulty level, then on "easy" one. Simply because on easy you won`t have enough BETA to level your pilots fast enough and they would die like flies on later missions.

War of Eusrath on iOS is pretty alright, if somewhat obsessed with tits and talking about tits.

>>

Story's not that bad, not very special but kinda decent. I don't actually remember seeing them talk about tits that much when I played it.
>>
>>11072346
Well, i've always liked those sort of games. There have been plenty of times say in playing the Total War series I've sent expeditionary forces or invasions, only to suffer upsets or even after winning victory after victory be unable to replenish numbers deep in enemy heartlands.

But it's fun to play like that sometimes. The struggle against losing can be more fun then winning.
>>
>>11071595
>>11071654
>>11072408

I understand the desire for challenge but this all just sounds it's difficult for the sake of saying it's difficult. It'd be like XCOM without new recruits to replace your dead ones. That just encourages players to drop the game and start a new one if something bad happens. It's a shitty game design.

>in playing the Total War series I've sent expeditionary forces or invasions, only to suffer upsets or even after winning victory after victory be unable to replenish numbers deep in enemy heartlands.

Yeah, but you can bounce back from that. It's not a total game killer. From what I'm reading in the thread, sounds like having 1 dead unit is tantamount to a delayed game over screen.
