Notes from the underground is a very disappointing book. The idea behind it is interesting and well thought out, but Dostoyevski just uses the book to rant about the ideological flaws of socialists. He doesn't use the book to develop a character with his own ideas, flaws and thought but rather a vessel that is used for political criticism. It leaves the book very lackluster, especially since the second part of the book is just some shitty story of how the underground man embarrassed himself while drinking with his friends and then met a whore.

OP, I suggest reading Welcome to the NHK. The prose is pretty shit and it's not the best book out there but it catches the emotions of a worthless human being much better, because that is what the book is actually about, unlike Notes from the Underground.
