This book stays with me more than any other as time goes by. I think it may be due to the perfect blend of antiquity and contemporary Moscow. It's hilarious, mysterious, smart and indecipherable all at the same time.

Do you guys love this as much as me?

Montale said it was good therefore it's good

I like it a lot, but I find Berlioz and Ivan (and of course Jesus and Pilate) to be a lot more interesting than the Master or Margarita. The novel was strongest in its wacky deliberations and good in its more-narrative focused second I half mainly because of the entwined storyline with Jerusalem

The unironical love stories are bad in every book.

Why do Russians love this book so much?

It's twice as good if you know the context. All the parodies are spot on. Spa resorts, sparkling juice shortage, everyone but artists on the street in middle day, laviscious parties... Hard to explain, but it's perfect view of communism.

also, read it in russian if you can or get a good translation -- this book in particular looses very much of its finesse in a bad translation

not to mention Bulgakov's magical realism a spot on, wonderfully balanced and meaningful. I'd say it's exactly what Marquez wished he could achieve in 100 years of solitude, but failed miserably

I just finished this book and I think almost all of it went over my head. I wish I wasn't so retarded
