How do I write a decent romantic subplot in a novel that doesn't belong to the romance genre? I really want to include it because it'll contribute to the character development and whatnot, but I don't want it to become like a tumor and kill the main story. How do I do it?

ever enjoyed a romance in a movie or a book before? figure out what you like about those ones and include those elements in your book

Right, I know that, but what worries me is if they occupy either too much or too little of the story. A lot of romantic subplots in fiction are criticised for either being under or overdeveloped, you know? I want to avoid that landmine.
