I'm looking for books about Pirates (fiction, not historiography) that are actually good. Apart from Treasure Island of course.
Is there a book about pirates that's the equivalent of what Blood Meridian is for Western genre? Or something that captures the jolly world of swashbuckling depicted by Polanski, Verbinski etc? I know that Pynchon could write a book like that, but is there anything somewhat comparable?
Maybe High Wind in Jamaica, but I don't fully understand your references so ymmv

Sabatini's Captain Blood is probably the high water mark of the sub-genre.
O'Brian's Aubrey-Matutin series hits similar marks better, though it's not about pirates.

So you think stuff like Blood Meridian or Last Exit to Brooklyn could have been published in 19th century? Or even pre-ww2 era?
