Where do I start lads? Anything else besides Duolingo? Is there a good textbook I can download? And do I need to know about different dialects?
Bumping for OP, I would like to know too.
Here's how i did it:
>Watch anime on italian for about two hours
>have google translate to look for spelling/meaning (makes it easier to pick up words when you know sc sounds like sh, or c is k except before e or i when it changes to ch)
>repeat
After doing this for four months or so, a friend told me to download duolingo. It's not terrible; but it only serves to reaffirm/practice what you'll learn on your own.
Just recently i've been starting to read books on italian. Last week bought one on how to play guitar

What are some essential Italian core literature? Aside from Dante, obviously.

Find something simple and power through it with an Italian-English dictionary. Luckily since this is Italian you're dealing with you can pick literally anything written in the language and it will be simple to process.
