start with a word that you can remember and is pretty close in meaning to the word you want.. Then look for synonyms and related words.

That’s how i find the words i want but can’t instantly remember.

that's mu current method, but i found it to be not that effective, because it's not just about the word, sometimes you can express better using more than one word and "synonym" only gives an alternate to the word you are looking for, and also sometimes it's about the way you write.
