What are some pieces of literature you guys found to be either too hated or overlooked? Pic related because I can't think of any.
>>
Dunno if this is what you mean, but I don't get The Catcher in the Rye hate.

yeah it counts

it's really good I think. i want to read it again because i read it in high school and it'd probably be much different now.

Satan's diary by Leonid Andreyev

Kerouac gets shit on unfairly around here. He's a much better writer than people would have you think.

I think that 'Swastika Night' is one of the best pieces of dystopic science-fiction ever written but it's been almost completely forgotten in favour of 1984 and Brave New World. It's very identity-politics oriented, so it's not outdated, if anything it's more relevant now. And it could be considered feminist but it actually acknowledges that men have feelings rather than treating them like Lifetime Movie villains like that neurotic misery-porn piece of shit The Handmaid's Tale.

Underrated dude from the Latin American Boom, José Donoso.

Mailer's overlooked. Sinclair Lewis is downright ignored. For all the love of Nietzsche and D&G no one ever talks about the writings of Artaud (not just The Theatre and Its Double, his LATER 'writings'). I don't think /lit/ appreciates Ginsburg's poetry as much as it should. Sontag's essays are overlooked, her non-fiction is god-tier (esp. Against Interpretation and Under the Sign of Saturn). Etcetera.

<3 mailer, he's like if Hemingway were actually talented (obviously not stylistically but in terms of being "literature for men")

very hit-or-miss but The Naked and the Dead is the only war novel the English language ever needed

What are Mailer's best books in your opinions?
>>

As the other anon said, The Naked and the Dead is a classic. From there, fiction-wise, The Executioner's Song. Then go for the non-fiction, his essay "The White Negro," as well as Armies of the Night then his masturbatory book on Marilyn Monroe (just for kicks ... and then read Pauline Kael's review OF Mailer's book)

Crystal Grader gets completely ignored because some indy hack wrote it.
