I'm still rooming with people from high school who I wasnt even friends with back then and am even less so now. I'd go on to say I actively dislike most of them. Outside of that I really only talk to coworkers, its nice because you get partnered up every night and you're forced to get to know them after a while. I'm pretty self concious of a skin condition I have so its hard to maintain a friendship because it flares up every few days and I dont leave my apartment. Cant say ive made an actual friend in my 3 years here
>What are your political views
Lean more towards the left, moreso on social issues than economic ones
>Also pretty much anything else about you would like to rant about
I'm trying to get closer to a coworker I get along particularly well with, but he's a huge pothead and I'm becoming one as well by virtue of hanging out with him more and I hate that I can see I'm becoming lazier every day. I've always had an issue with drugs and now that he's set me up with a dealer with cheap as shit prices I feel like I'm going down a bad path.

Especially a bad time because I realized one of my issues is that I dont have many hobbies (anymore) and that's a large barrier to socializing with people and basically becoming a better person. Over the past few years all my hobbies have dropped off one by one in exchange for more shitposting here

I tend to keep to myself, but I find it easy to get to know people. My being a math major plays on peoples prejudice of math majors being highly intelligent, so my relationships tend to consist of people asking me for help on problems they have and not very much else.

>What are your political views
Classical Liberalism.

>Also pretty much anything else about you would [l]ike to rant about
Free will does not exist. Philosophical Idealism is horse shit (the material world exists and it is intelligible). Math is discovered and not invented. Math begets reason. Math is absolutely necessary for the understanding of the objective world. IQ is real, one dimensional, unalterable, and determined by biological factors only.

I hang out with a group of people I went to high school with and I have only a few acquaintances that I've become familiar with since I started attending the university. There's one girl I study with very often that's kind of my friend, but despite spending on average twenty hours a week alone together on top of the classes we take, we've never hung out outside of an academic setting. Pretty sure she's just using me to help her get into medical school.
>What are your political views
Not completely sure yet. I lean conservative libertarian, but I'm not dead set in much besides a Catholic viewpoint. I'm still trying to figure out the best approach to politics and the justification for it.
>Also pretty much anything else about you would like to rant about
We're rated as "The second most diverse campus in the United States and very likely the world", and the administration does not let anyone forget it. Politically, it's not too bad, but there is a sizable illegal immigrant student population that is just thrown free money while I don't get so much as a subsidized loan. Going to college in Las Vegas is not nearly exciting as you'd expect it to be, and since I graduated high school I've been to the strip maybe three or four times in total.

How?
You just have to build the confidence and strength of character to say howdy or strike up a conversation about anything. If you spend enough time around someone doing the same thing they are, then they will feel obligated to acknowledge your existence and say howdy back.

Where?
In class, at the dining hall, at the math-lounge, or at the gym. Maybe the library if you're extra cunning; the problem with it is the second floor is being renovated and now no one knows where to go in order to study. It's like people are now lost.

>since it's the closest that I can get to a science degree, without the difficulty that they entail.

if you wanna be a good and well respected linguist you'll need to learn quite a bit of statistics, logic and even some programming knowledge wouldn't hurt.

linguistics is indeed a lot like a science degree, and that's why it's so great: it is much less infested with the kind of charlatans you'll meet in most humanities departments.

of course, with the right mindset, you can certainly become an academic fraud if you want, but i'm assuming you want to be a legit linguist publishing relevant papers on the field.

linguistics has many different fields of study: syntax, phonology, phonetics, morphology, and so on. withing these fields you have many different objects to study, ie you can focus on studying polynesian languages' syntax or you may try to work on computational models to predict and describe Inuit morphology.

I, for one, work with indigenous languages' syntax within a cognitive framework. This means I get to travel to remote hellholes and talk with aboriginal people and run tests and so on.

It is a lot of fun, but it takes a lot of work. and nobody will take your seriously outside of academia, but that's alright.

i highly recommend it.
>>
>>9977429
I forgot to mention you'll end up with a huge knowledge of interesting facts about many different languages, which you'll always try to talk about with people when you're drunk, making a fool of yourself in most cases.
>>
>>9971567
How is McMasters linguistics department if you were to rate it?
>>
>>9977458
It's good. It's no MIT or Cambridge but it has good resources (eye tracking/acoustics labs, good range of courses being offered per term, reputable professors).

Most professors at the program are very passionate about their work, which is great. Plus, the greatest professors at the department recieved their PhDs from MIT, so they were properly trained in linguistics, which makes a huge difference when picking your advisor.

The department leans towards cognitive linguistics, statistical linguistics and neuroscience. If that's your kind of thing, it's a good deal. I'm here because I was given a scholarship for my tuitions and my living costs, so I just couldn't pass the oportunity. If I could chose I'd rather go to UofT since living in Hamilton is not too great (it's way better than living in my third world homecountry tho)
>>
>>9977429
This is pretty much all the advice and information that I could have hoped for. Thanks a bunch.

I've already got a pretty good foothold on semantics and computational linguistics as a result of my self-studies. I seriously love how many subfields that linguistics has; that's why I became so interested in it. An English degree only entails poring over canon tomes and writing half-hearted essays, and I find that boring.

I'm not worried about not being taken seriously because of what I chose to study.

I'm going to seriously consider linguistics as a major now. Would you recommend that I drop English entirely, or should I take hold of it as a minor?

>Would you recommend that I drop English entirely, or should I take hold of it as a minor?

Unless minoring in English will consume too much of your time/money (that you could be investing in studying linguistics), just hold of it as a minor I guess. Just try to take as many courses on linguistics as you can.

Also, I can't recommend this enough: read Chomsky's earlier works on linguistics, even if you're not going to work with generativist theory. You'll be thankful for this later.

I wish you very good luck on your journey anon!

Would a double major in Economics and CompSci be a reasonable choice for getting a career? I'm 18 and don't know jackshit about much really.

I'm not in the US if that means anything.
>>
>>9978170
Why wpuld you combine the two?

If you want to be a quant, the banks just hire physocs and pure math majors
>>
>>9978198
Basically I can't decide what I want to do, something that combines both somehow would be the dream but that's probably unrealistic. I guess it's to allow me to be able to choose between two career paths, but I don't even know if either could get me a job, especially Eco.

I don't really want to be a quant or something like that, I'm fairly average at maths and it just doesn't interest me.
>>
>>9978234
Quants are the only ones whocombine the two. It is more efficient for banks to simply hire people from physics grad pools and train them independently of shitty schools though.

You might wanna choose one or the other. I dunno manz

That's the entire point of me doing this degree. I'm a complete autist, life confuses me and I don't want any interpersonal relationships, but if I don't keep myself busy day and night I start craving those things and it makes me horribly depressed. Okay boys anyone who did A levels in England or anyone really who fucking graduated high school help me out-

I'm twenty and got AAA in maths phys and bio a couple years ago, hated it, didn't apply for uni

I'm doing English Lit this year and am going to apply to top unis, see if I can get anywhere, but I need three fucking A levels for UCAS in one year - I'm going to have to self study two of them.

So, what are the two easiest A-Levels that require no coursework? I was thinking something from economics, psychology, sociology.

The latter two seem to mesh better while if economics is mainly statistics then it could be a piece of piss. And btw I did Further Maths already two years ago and got a C, haven't done any maths since then, and I generally think that is too difficult an option.

TLDR; Need to get three As at A level in one year, both AS and A2. Am doing English Literature, what are the two easiest self study A levels that aren't media studies level? cheers lads.

i unfortunately missed mullholland drive as well. lynch is a seriously skilled painter and i appreciated seeing his art on a big screen, but i found the narration underwhelming. there wasn't much that felt unmistakeable genuine/not willfully self-curated, but maybe lynch was being 100% frank and i just don't get his style. (context: the only lynch thing i've ever seen is the first episode of twin peaks, which i did not enjoy.)

the scenes with lynch doing art were pretty good. i think i'd like to try ceramics.

what did you like about the documentary?

Surely it matters what subject you want to apply to? Top unis will want something course-related. If you're doing wanting to do English Lit then I guess that A-level will be enough but you might want to reconsider Further Maths if you're gonna do STEM.
Can't help much because I did the same A-levels as you (plus Chemistry, wouldn't recommend). But economics is not statistics-heavy, there's barely any mathematics. It's more about explaining economic concepts and applying them. Seems easy, though I only know about it through my friends.

>>
>>9983019
Workload can be fairly heavy but overall it's pretty enjoyable and the supervisors are generally brilliant. Lot of variety in the course and flexibility to study what you want as well. Also the other people on the course are all very like-minded, intellectual and mostly down to earth, other than a few Etonite snobs.
>>
>>9983270
From what I've seen AAA might get you on a course at Oxford (as that's their standard offer) but if you're gap yearing / applying after you've got your results it will be tough, as many in the same position will have 1-3 A*s. Those subjects are fine, make sure to avoid undesirable/meme/easy courses though as Oxbridge look down on them.
>>

Economics at A level is 90% essay skills with a dash of stats embedded in to support your arguments. It is also hard, especially in the context of self study where you don't have a teacher critiquing any ideological holes you might fall down. From what i understand Business Studies is the 'easy' economics.

I got 3 As and i'm at Oxford doing EngLang/Lit. It's far more important to be able to interview well.
>>
>>9983086
He's at Stanford, give him a break. Knowing the difference between median and average is hard
>>
>>9983647
Okay thanks for the advice. I will be probably doing it with a distance learning program so I will have at least some access to a teacher - I need it to be somewhat hard because I can't have too many weak subjects on my UCAS; classical civilisation is related to the course but it isn't classics proper and it isn't as esteemed.

What did you do at A level? And how much had you read when you interviewed? - I don't know how much the average student has actually read outside the A level course. In terms of the Oxford course I've read all of Shakespeare, The Canterbury Tales, Paradise Lost, important parts of the Bible and all with supplementary critical reading (maybe only wikipedia and gradesaver for some things but its something) and I have interest in rhetoric and close aesthetic reading - this should suffice, right? - I feel like I'm bursting with things I could talk about and reference points to approach questions from but I don't know for sure how much the smart kids have read.

Therefore, in addition to English Literature, what two should I take as self study (well, via a distance learning school) from History, Philosophy, and Classical Civilisation. Bearing in mind the only one that Oxford actively recommends is History.

Also, does anyone know if Classical Civ and Philosophy are only done by private school smart kids? Because that would kind of suck for me.
>>
>>9983992
Have you ever advocate fascistic ideas in your philosophy papers? What happens?
>>
>>9984080
My A-Levels were Eng Lang, Eng Lit, and Economics.
As per the kind of reading that I had done around the course before I went:
I was fairly intimately familiar with the key Romantic poets, i'd read a significant proportion of Shakespeare's work, and I had a working knowledge of a few basic areas of literary criticism (think Barthes' Death of the Author and Foucault's response to his arguments). Other than that I was reading a lot of continental existentialist stuff, and a healthy amount of other classic lit from Hemingway backwards - but that didn't really come up until they asked me what i 'read for fun'. The interviews are constructed around the names you drop in your personal statement, and the topics of your submitted essays.
What they want in the interview is for you to be engaged and enthusiastic about the material you have been studying in school, and to be able to demonstrate that you are developing the modes of thought which that entails to explore other ideas about literature. They are NOT looking for an encyclopedic knowledge of the entire western literary tradition, and nobody who i met at interviews who could rattle off Milton's bibliography and then not talk about his ideas managed to secure a place.

Amherst? I went there. It sucked so much. I can only imagine what the place was like on election night.

It's a fun idea, especially in undergrad, to think that you're going to be a cool rebel who flirts with dangerous ideas, but you quickly learn that professors are faggots who abuse their power so systemically that they wouldn't even see it as a "challenge to their ways of thinking." They'd just personally dislike you and use it as an excuse to drag your GPA down.

Or if you're in some intro class with 200 people, the TA grading your paper will barely know more than you do about philosophy anyway, he's just some 25 year old fucking retard, so your casually edgy, technically-true mentioning of the ambiguity of some Nazi policy to illustrate one of your points will simply be seen as "HITLER DID NOTHING WRONG! BE NITPICKY ABOUT 50 OTHER ASPECTS OF MY PAPER THAT I CAN'T REALLY DISPUTE, AS AN EXCUSE TO HOLD MY GPA HOSTAGE!"

In certain contexts you can do interesting things at college, but in general, it's best to be mindful of which appendage of the gigantic bloated bureaucracy you're really offending.

I also go to UIUC but I'm and Economics and History major. I also have mainly hung out with friends from high school except I have made a few friends from my classes as well. I'm also graduating this semester so I've mainly been splitting up my time between work, gym, hanging out with friends and figuring out what the fuck I want to do after I graduate. Of course that's unless you work your ass to get a scholarship which is near impossible on many terms (having a near percect GPA, tons of admission letters from respected people, belonging into a privileged class like being a white protestant or a jew, etc.) Still, each Ivy League school have their own terms but that's ganaerally the main idea.

I had sex with two different girls the very first week of school. I found a girlfriend and now fuck her daily; the other girl I fucked is her roommate. Somehow they're both okay with this. I've made no passes at the roommate since first week. I also have some other good friends whom I cherish deeply.
I bounce between generally libertarian values,
and some classical liberalism. Sometimes I really feel like a hardcore conservative, and there are days where i'll fantasize about building libraries in the ghetto. My politics are mucky to say the least.

I think college is a very good life-learning experience and is a necessary requisite to the character building of the nation's youth. It has, in our time, inflated into an ugly and inefficient means of job securing and is moreover a general delay to adulthood for many college students. This issue is continually exploited by the abhorrent conglomerate that is now ''''higher''' american education, textbook corporations, retail companies and most of the service industries being contracted to build stuff for the colleges. People today, I think, are too fixated on whether a place is prestigious, which is much less important than the work you yourself are contributing as an academic, or the education you are obtaining for the job that you otherwise seek.

And why the fuck is Ohio so fucking awful?
>>
>>9985337
Education in America is really expensive and Ivy League schools are the most expensive ones out there. That's why people won't risk graduating from an average profession in those colleges when you can literally get the same degree in a less expensive state school. Most of us in/lit/ could easily get into an Ivy League college but only a few of us could manage to graduate from there because of the cost of it. To be honest, I don't see the appeal of graduating from an Ivy unless you're aspiring to be a doctor or a lawyer.
>>
>>9985436
Wrong, Ivies have a high sticker price (and there are countless other private schools just as expensive) but they give great financial aid. I would guess more than half the full cost of attendance is covered for more than half the students.

Just luck and autism, I guess. Good GPA and GREs, good letters of rec, but my sample and proposal were "good" at best, not great.

Social Thought has some incredible professors, literally some internationally leading figures. I love a lot of the people in the program and I take a lot of classes there, but you gotta be slightly careful with a Social Thought PhD in terms of the academic job market.

Personally, I think it's a little bit too much of a cliche around here that Social Thought is terrible for job prospects, post-PhD. Sometimes it seems like people are just saying it because it's the thing to say. But I have been told by more than one professor that it's a good thing I didn't go Social Thought.

I think it depends what you do and who you work with, and how serious you are about professionalization. Some Social Thought people seem to spread themselves a bit thinly across interdisciplinary boundaries and not worry enough about gearing themselves for a tenure track position. Just make sure to research the program (and maybe get an in-the-know grad student drunk, if you visit).

It really, REALLY depends on what program you want to do. Research into the profs for what you want to study and judge from there. My program is extremely small but full of pretty prominent people who have taught at Oxford and some Ivy Leagues. But be careful, some of them are hot garbage that I wouldn't be a part of if I had a full ride. Because of how small we are (especially when compared to like U of T or UBC) the faculty for most programs is tiny, which contributes to why we rank so low (wayyyy less output of research). If the program you want to do has good faculty you should definitely come here, because we're a lot smaller than the other major Canadian schools it's much easier to build good connections with your profs and have them set you up for the future. I know several people who are going to Ivies + Cambridge for grad school because they played it right. We even pumped out a Rhodes Scholar last year.

>>Brief description of social life (fucked up stories welcome)
I don't think I am very likable. I don't enjoy what I do. I have no serious friends but I want them desperately. I started playing Magic: The Gathering last year to be able to interact with other people and fill a sort of sick gap in my useless, filthy life. I became engrossed with it and began thinking about deckbuilding and optimization for hours a day. I waste hundred of dollars a month buying cards and it is running me dry. I know some people who also play MTG now, but I think they do not know or care to learn my name. I know their names. I think they resent me and I dislike them much of the time. They slight me in games and I cannot forget about it. I hold numerous grudges for minor game events and I want to open up my skull for thinking this way. I cannot help some things. Most people might find me unpleasant but I try to be kind and accommodating. I think I may be just extremely vain and unintelligent.
My mother likes me I think. My younger brother ridicules me. I do not like haircut people touching me or being near my face som my hair is sort of long, and my younger brother (who is 10) calls me "creepy" and I hear him laugh about me in front of his friends. My dad talks to me occasionally. He was an alcoholic when I was a kid, did AA two years ago, became "spiritual," "changed," all that, and has been trying to interact with me more. He bought me a pack of M&Ms today when he got home from work and I feel sick about it. He was earnest about it and all. Something about it makes me feel immense guilt.
>>What are your political views
Infant circumcision is the the most widespread, disgusting scourge on the West. I can't sleep thinking of all the neonates being genitally disfigured. I think about foreskin excision, bloody bloody infant prepuce, infant screams, day after day and I do not want to think about this all the time anymore. I think it is affecting my wellbeing. My family is Jewish and I said something about these thoughts to my mom and she stopped talking to me for a while and I don't talk about it anymore. They are Jewish and they think I am but I revile it all, the ceremony, the rituals, the blood. It is not good for me. I am not a chosen person I am a normal man like other men. I do not want to hurt children in their most vulnerable state.

It has little turquoise beads in it. I never wore it. Such it is. Tests always fuck me up and shorten my lifespan. I obsess and stress and over practice and have this weird jerking panic reaction during the actual thing that infects my composition. It happened to me nine hours ago and I feel nauseous still and think I may have contracted a virus of some sort from the breathing of the woman who took the test next to me.
I think I need a serious friend that is not only my friend on the basis of a card game. I do not think I would be able to offer anything to the friend for being my friend though. I have no social currency. I also want to have sex desperately. I have never done so and am thinking about trying as I think it would be beneficial to me, though I have this sinking feeling that I would just be leeching off another person, they would be there only for my gratification. I have nothing to offer.

The M&Ms are sitting on my desk and twisting up my brain. My dad got them for me for doing the test. I told him about the test I would take this morning and he wished me good luck and told me he was proud of me and he gave me the candy earnestly when he came home from work. He has never done anything like that and I did so poorly that I feel horrible about it. He asked me about it and gave me the candy and I am sure I am getting pneumonia or hiv at this point. You can say I am vain as it is mostly mostly a true thing to say.
