Are there any books that take an overview/survey approach to the classical underworld? I've read the classics and I'm fairly interested in learning about the importance the ancient and early modern writers placed on the afterlife, what their beliefs and superstitions were and their rituals and customs. Any recommendations?

Dante's Divine Comedy. Basically all Western depictions of a "hell" or underworld are based on it

Is there anything they can't do? I wish you goys would stop complaining and just make contributions to art and science.

I've read many of the classics, including Dante, Homer, Virgil. I'm not necessarily looking for another classic but more of an academic or scholarly survey of what the underworld meant to ancient and early-modern writers, and what impact the afterlife had on their lives.
