When did you grow out of contemporary fiction? For me it was in 11th grade after reading Murakami's' Kafka on the Shore'. I switched to classics, poetry and non-fiction and never looked back.
Contemporary poetry is the absolute best, however.

I was never into it. My school experiences with it were utterly terrible.
Anything post-1800 is intolerable.

You can't disregard the Modernists and still play the elitist. I'll give you anything post-WWII being skippable though, with some stuff with reading if you're interested.
