Is the book better than thr 2016 movie adaption?
I'd put both in the "good not great" category, so up to your personal preference.

The book was excellent, far better than the movie, it doesn't have a dumb jew as the main actor.

But back to serious discussion, I think the movie does a fine job translating Endo to a mass audience. I still think The Samurai is his masterpiece, but Silence is a noble effort.

Andrew Garfield really ruined it for me. He can't act as a Jesuit at all and his only expression is a variation of looking dumb. It's fine for things like Hacksaw ridge where he was actually acting someone who was kinda dumb, but he's a horrible miscast for Silence. That and the whole apostasy is just fine element to the movie not nearly as pronounced in the book.
Couldn't find the samurai in epub/pdf sadly, only Kikus Prayer and Silence.
