At book 8 of The Malazan Book of the Fallen, I firmly believe this is the greatest fantasy series created to date. Prove to me there are even greater works out there so i don't give up on finding something so great once i have finished reading.
First one is shit, which depreciates the latter books.

You have to be a cretin to read past the first one, so your taste is already proven to be shit if you go beyond it.
Interesting in starting this someday in the future. Is it worth reading at almost 30 years old?

OP here, it's downfalls are:
The author doesn't care about you, he throws you in to chaos and you either get rewarded for stucking through it, or end up wasting your own time.
The story is VAST, 3+ continents of humans and humanoids and demons and gods and magic. Hard to keep track of.
More points of view than all of reality tv put together
Slow crawls, some times 3/4 of a book long.
Good points:
Very rewarding to those who devote the time needed
Incredible plots
Very emotional story (in the greatest of ways)
Wonderful attention to detail (brought on by a background in both anthropology a d archaeology)
Great characters who are almost never seen as either good or evil, every one seems very realistic
