Why don't you try His Dark Materials? That's a great fantasy starter book.

ASOIAF is good if you want the medieval-like setting and political intrigue... but you might be left frustrated if Gurm doesn't finish the books before he dies.

Alternatively, if you want to impress /lit/ you could always Start with the Greeks. They churned out shitloads of fantasy. Try the Illiad, perhaps ;)
