The truth is in fact that Houellebecq's plots are often EXACT reflections of shit that happened to him, no fictionalization included.

After his first novel (Extension.... aka Whatever) came out some journalist googled the names of the characters and discovered they were actually people, including the middle-aged unmarried woman he mocks and his Chad boss who he hates. They both wished Michel had changed their names but he obviously doesn't give a fuck. The stuff about the ex-wife and stuff is all true. I imagine that the reason his novels often include two contrasting characters (Michel and Bruno, Our Hero and Tisserand) is that Houellebecq knows the darker and perhaps truer side of his personality is pretty pathetic and hilarious and separates that from the more detached, analytic and virtuous (or perhaps apathetic) side of his personality.

I recommend Houellebecq's manifesto "To Stay Alive" (free online). It's really frank, no bullshit advice for depressed wagecucks who want to """become""" """artists""".
