Try Kevin McDonald's Culture of Critique Series to realize why he was so influential in (((academia)))
You can pretty much dive into Truth and Method after you're familiar with Heidegger and with idealist hermeneutics. Gadamer also has many good essays, some collected in the volume "Philosophical Hermeneutics" which you can read right after T&M. From there, whichever of his monographs/essays interest you - his short book on Hegel is pretty OK, and he has one on scientific worldview or something like that.
The more familiarity you have with the hermeneutic circle and German dialectical thinking, and in particular Heidegger's conception of truth as disclosure, the better off you'll be.
I liked this book as a general intro to hermeneutics:
>Hermeneutics: Interpretation Theory in Schleiermacher, Dilthey, Heidegger, and Gadamer
