Kichijiro is not a Judas-type character, because Rodrigues is not a Jesus-type character. Rodrigues wishes he could be a Jesus figure, but doesn't understand the most important thing about Jesus--his absolute, selfless love for humanity. Kichijiro represents the base, unlovable aspects of humanity. He, unlike Judas, betrays his faith for an ephemeral sense of security, not for wealth. The lesson that Rodrigues must learn is that to emulate Christ, he needs to get over his revulsion towards Kichijiro and embrace him as a flawed, yet vital part of God's creation.
