Also, some people have a hard time letting things go, particularly when it's taken up a large portion of their lives.
On a much smaller anecdotal scale, I was talking to someone at a party once who refused to read the last chapter of a book because that way it "never ends". To me it's dumb, but if that's how they are able to rationalise it to themselves then so be it.
