What's wrong with Mary Sue's?

The nature of the Mary Sue is the lack of conflict. Thus, the story becomes just prose and description.

Depends on how it's implemented. An author could self-insert as someone who's extremely incompetent, ugly and generally shit if they want to. They could also write a god-like character who shows up for 5 minutes and isn't important at all

The origin of "Mary Sue" is that those types of character literally were self-inserts. That should always be the determining factor of a character being a Mary Sue and one half of the reason why they're shit.

The other half of the reason is that a Mary Sue isn't just a self-insert. It's a self-insert who is only there so that the author can live vicariously through them. Whether the character's life is perfect or not, as long as it's somewhat more exciting and/or somewhat better than the author's actual life, then the character is a Mary Sue.

Thus, the fuller reason why Mary Sues suck is because it's embarrassingly sad that a writer could think that what they've made is anything except obvious and cringey.

You can't judge characters as being Mary Sues or not based on non-plot life descriptions, as in OP's pic. Because the left character could easily live an "epic" life if her arc is happy/hopeful/exciting enough. The right character could have their virtues poked into, and you might get an interesting story about how those seemingly perfect qualities can have their problems.
