Starting Orlando Furioso this evening.
What should I expect?
Good taste, yes, no?
The wrong experience as that's the prose translation. Shit sux but penguin is the way to go this round

So, go Penguin over Oxford?
>>9912357
No.
You want the Belknap Press version translated by Slavitt.
Is the John Harington translation acceptable?
>>9912374
Disgusting. Slavitt is notorious for his deliberately inaccurate and abridged translations he fancies as "the translators art". Not much Ariosto to come after there.

The Oxford edition by Guido Waldman is fine. Even though it's a verse-to-prose adaptation, it works excellent for the Orlando Furioso.
On the surface, Ariosto is weaving his tale in the line of the epic tradition, brushing shoulders with luminaries such as Homer, Virgil, Ovid and Dante. But there is a strong, permeating element of satire: sometimes plain, often subtle. The narrative is tightly interconnected and the didactic philosophy unfolds progressively – read it in big chunks.

Yes, it's probably the best English translation despite its age
