That one is a really quick read because its illustrated and abridged.
Its a rare look into a fascinating time period and setting that very few Westerners are aware of, basically China transitioning out of being ruled by an Emperor, Westerners increasing their control and influence and all the growing pains of a huge nation that might have been on the brink of modernization if it weren't for the subsequent setback with Japan and WW2.

pearl s buck isnt that good of a writer and her translations from chinese to english are awful
