Why is my country reverting to Tribalism?

In the words of Dr. Sagan, a divided tribal community would have made "enormous evolutionary sense"... millions of years ago, when we were hunters and gatherers. This is no longer the case. The problem inherent with humanity is that science and technology are propelling us forward at an exponential rate, but not much has changed with us. Were still those same humans from millions of years ago.

Has anyone ever read pic related? What are your opinions on science and it's role in our fragile future as a species, where this cold, unemotional and rational force is providing us with more and more means to either save or destroy ourselves?

This isn't a political thread, but the recent events in the USA in Charlottesville just highlights the situation we humans have contended with for so long. Why can't we educate, help, and bring one another up to a sense of confidence and understanding?

I am lost, /lit/. In my own country. Science may be a candle in the dark, but what good is it if we all collectively insist on keeping our eyes shut.

Thoughts on the text? The situation we face, together?

Your country is not "reverting" in any way, shape, form, direction.

If you want even the smallest thing to stop turning into a retarded political battleground, you would have to outgrow the two-party system and the culture thereof, in which any person, idea or resource that is accused of being anywhere near the Outside/Big Other/Heideggeria Nothing is automatically offered as a gift to the other great party, and the American people is this child raised by abusive parents that challenge each other for the biggest hands and loudest mouth, but deep down are passionately in love with one another, a love of a sadomasochistic kind.

>This isn't a political thread
Nonsense.

>Why can't we educate, help, and bring one another up to a sense of confidence and understanding?
Because most people are deeply irrational and simply don't know how to think straight. Which means they get indoctrinated by small elites that want to convert them to their cause and use them for their purposes.

The Charlottesville mess happened because a veritable army of morons showed up armed and masked and attacked other people that were harmlessly protesting.
Why did they attack them? Because they got indoctrinated into thinking that they were "nazis", that any form of pride in one's history or race is "evil" (but only if it comes from whites, otherwise it's wonderful), and that they must do anything to crush them. Even attacking a car with bats and stones, breaking its windows and forcing the driver to run for his life, thereby running over a few of them.
In their irrational, pigeon brains, they weren't retarded thugs, they're libertarian heroes. Because they can't think. They genuinely don't see the problem in behaving that way.

Science is a wonderful thing, a very powerful one, a tool that has made our potential growth infinite. But the irrationality of the majority of the people (and economic interests that discourage some research paths - like immortality) will always keep it chained and muzzled.

The only solution would be to use science to improve our brains. A form of transhumanism that would make us smarter and more rational. But the same idiots that are causing problems now will never accept that because they've also been indoctrinated to think that it would "disrupt the natural order" and would eliminate what it means to be "human" and all that bullshit.

So the only doable solution is genociding most of the idiots. Thankfully we're moving fast towards it. Here's to optimism.

Scientific investigation can give us insight in this world and new tech can give is more options and general ability. However it cannot dictate what we want.

Want is the root cause of your woes. You assume that space exploration coupled with "education" means that we ourselves as a whole are going to change. Why?

You can't destroy hatred. People will find comunnity in it just loke theu could everuthong else. It feels good to take a stand against something and to conqouer your enemy in this world. It's an emotion OP, it's just as ridiculous as 1984's proposal that Big Brother could destroy love for everything else other than love for Big Brother.

I think Trump offered us the most succinct explanation when he said "covfefe".

This is a cool /r/science simulation thread.

Can't go back, xer. I uploaded my brain here and am enlightened by my transhuman genocidal intelligence.

What good would science have done in Charlottesville? Science was made for answering "how" questions, not "what" questions. It can you help to find the best path towards your goal but cannot set a goal for you. What happened in Charlottesville was caused by a conflict of goals, not by following the wrong path, and so science could have accomplished absolutely nothing.

>What are your opinions on science and it's role in our fragile future as a species?
Science as we now know it is doomed to wither away and become irrelevant as it becomes more and more estranged from the people.

>Through money, democracy becomes its own destroyer, after money has destroyed intellect.
Ever since science became a career rather than a hobby for wealthy aristocrats and religious scholars, it became possible for scientific opinion to be bought by the highest bidder. This connection between money and science, visible to anyone who looks close enough, has contributed to tainting the practice of science in the public's eyes, a taint which reaches even the legitimate scientists.
"Scientific facts" are accepted by the average Joe, not because they've done the experiments and made the measurements, but because they've been taught to trust in "science". When "science" betrays that trust, when it reveals its faults, it diminishes their trust, not just in those scientists who do bad science, but in the institutions of science as a whole.
In school we are told that "science" is good, that "science" finds the truth. We are not taught to look critically at what science says, because then we might reject some of what scientists tell us, and that's something that the people paying good money for scientific opinion just can't risk. But this uncritical acceptance of science, when shown to be wrong, is much more likely to morph into its polar opposite – the uncritical dismissal of science – than into the correct but impractical middle-ground – the critical evaluation of each and every scientific claim by its own merits.

Of course, it is not money alone which is at fault for the decline of science. Two other reasons for it are due to scientists/science-enthusiasts and to the natural evolution of science itself.

>Every "Age of Enlightenment" proceeds from an unlimited optimism of the reason — always associated with the type of the megalopolitan — to an equally unqualified scepticism. The sovereign waking-consciousness, cut off by walls and artificialities from living nature and the land about it and under it, cognises nothing outside itself. It applies criticism to its imaginary world, which it has cleared of everyday sense-experience, and continues to do so till it has found the last and subtlest result, the form of the form — itself: namely, nothing. With this the possibilities of physics as a critical mode of world understanding are exhausted, and the hunger for metaphysics presents itself afresh.
Western science began its life by seeking to explain common natural phenomena, which it did admirably, and now, having exhausted all the low-hanging fruit, it turns its attention towards abstractions.
Gravity, movement, light, reproduction; These are things that are easily understood, things that are real to us. But modern-day science no longer speaks in these terms; rather, it speaks of abstractions; space-time warping, atoms, photons, DNA, neurons, etc. These things may be "real" to the universe, but they are NOT real to us as humans. We don't see the atoms that make up a vase, we see the vase itself. When science stopped speaking of vases and started speaking of their atoms instead, as if the atoms were more real than the vase itself, it began to lose its grip on the common man. When it began to speak of neurons as if they were more real than the people themselves, its fate was sealed.

>There is no justification for assigning to this intellectual form-world the primacy over others. Every critical science, like every myth and every religious belief, rests upon an inner certitude. Various as the creatures of this certitude may be, both in structure and in sound, they are not different in basic principle. Any reproach, therefore, levelled by Natural science at Religion is a boomerang. We are presumptuous and no less in supposing that we can ever set up * 'The Truth" in the place of "anthropomorphic" conceptions, for no other conceptions but these exist at all.
Lastly, there is the tendency of many scientific-minded people to try to dismiss or appropriate all that which lies beyond the reach of the scientific methods; the notion of science as the ONLY truth. Inevitably this behavior produces a reaction within the population. When these people claim that science and religion are incompatible, that science is in fact the enemy of religion, then people are forced to choose between one of the two, and it should come as no surprise that many will choose the powerful truths of religion over the nihilistic intellectualism of science.
