Is there a richer sci fi universe than 40k?
Asking for a friend
Not really, since the 40k setting is a pastiche of everything you could possibly think to throw in it, having been created collaboratively by hobbyists as a side thing to the tabletop game and spared over-management from above
But that was back in the 90s. It's been over-managed into the ground for longer than it was great at this point. The writing was on the wall when they started whoring out shitty novels and letting talentless faggots like Matt Ward retrofit the entire universe and all its existing lore to service their own pet canon.
When people say 40k, they mean how it was when they were a kid. It's been shit for years.

Yeah but who pays attention to modern happenings atm? As far as I can tell having any canon progression was always going to end in tears.
The fact is that humanity is by default the player character unless you're an elf fag and the whole idea was that it was a point in time where multiple horrors each with the ability to eradicate humanity were converging.
Still its got to be said that the first few books of the Horus Heresy qualify as "good trash" and some of the Imperial Guard tabletop rpg fan fiction I've read was actually quite entertaining
I have a friend that loves to read these books. He describes them as shallow but makes up for it in quantity.

First three are really good of the Horus Heresy. I listened to the audio books though and it actually felt pretty epic
