this and Bloy's novels
+ I'd say Broch and Krasznahorkai

Gogol

Why does /lit/ love this guy so much?
His sense of what Russia is supposed to represent in the 19th century turned out to be complete bullshit.
His idea of what socialist activism looks like is distorted to no end.
>muh Russian god
>muh Russian people, the shining beacon of righteousness to the nihilist West

If that's what you get out of literature, you're doing it wrong.

Hamsun, Kafka the list could go on

I tend pile these books together. They all have that gloomy, we-are-all-doomed atmosphere.
Maxim Gorky. Childhood and Lower Depths
Turgenev Mumu
Of the 20th century writers I would recommend Sholokhov (Don novel) and Korolenko (Children Underground). Also, have a look at Shukshin and Solzhenitzyn short stories.

I think Gogol has a completely different tone, it is more of a magic realism

Yeah, Bloy has that feverish Christian reactionary intensity shared with Dostoevsky.

For Broch, would you mean The Sleepwalkers? I was thinking of getting that or Death of Virgil. Both sound great.

Krasznahorkai strikes me as atheist Dostoevsky although I haven't read him. Mostly from what I've read about him and the Bela Tarr films.

I like the psychological and spiritual aspect of Dosto. Any authors that handles characters in a similar manner?

bernanos

Why?
He explicitly wrote Demons as a political pamphlet "even if the artistic merit may suffer from this".

Broch: I’ve only been reading Death of Vergil, but that’s very different from Dosto. It’s heavy stream-of-consciousness without any real action. Top 5 hardest to read books I’ve encountered.

Krasznahorkai: His books barely have full-fledged characters or exciting plots. I love him, but don’t see a relation to Dostoievski.

What defines Dostoievski for me is that in his books he thoroughly dissects the psychology of the characters, he has actually interesting (tragic) plots to give the characters something to react to in the first place, and his style is engaging and plain.

I think that this kind of writing has mostly gone out of style in the 20th century, where most "literary" authors started going for a fancy style, or else for a minimalism that also included minimalism of further reflection upon the character’s actions.

On the other hand, Dostoievski’s contemporaries are simply lacking his psychological approach -- it’s what makes him stand out among them to begin with.

The only books I know that contain as elaborate psychological observations as Dosto’s are indeed IJ and The Pale King. But obviously they’re much different in style and mostly also lack plot.

Fire and especially Earth are way easier than the intro, just wait for the last chapter, is really fucking nuts
